There is no doubt about it, Netflix has created some pretty strong horror and thriller films and series. Now they are set to release their very first miniseries, called 1992, and it definitely has an extremely dark theme.

If you have watched series such as The Haunting of Hill House, Marianne, Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher, you know Netflix isn’t afraid to get dark and spooky, and 1992 promises to dive deep into unsettling territory as well.

1992 is directed and co-created by Alex de la Iglesia, who also directed The Day of the Beast. In that film, Catholic priest Father Angel Berriartua is in search of the antichrist, said to be an infant. Aiding Berriartua are a heavy metal fan and a psychic.

The screenwriter of the new miniseries is Jorge Guerricaechevarria, who won the coveted Goya award for Cell 211 in 2009 and for Las Leyes de la Frontera in 2021. Guerricaechevarria was also nominated for The Day of The Beast, La comunidad and The Oxford Murders. His esteemed career as a screenwriter dates back to 1993.

In 1992, Amparo (Marian Alvarez) is driven to find answers after her dies in a strange explosion. Helping her in her search for answers is Richi (Fernando Valdivielse), an alcoholic ex-cop now working as a security.

Together, the two are investigating a series of mysterious murders that definitely follow a set pattern: each of the killer’s victims have been burned, and next to each body is a Curro doll. Curro was the mascot of Seville’s Expo ’92 (thus the title of the miniseries).

1992 will be available to stream on Netflix December 13

1992 was filmed in Seville and Madrid, and stars Fernando Valdivielso, Marian Alvarea, Paz Vega and Carlos Santos. The Spanish series has been described as “a thriller that mixes suspense and political intrigue.”

Netflix has not yet released the official trailer for 1992, but the photos and premise are intriguing enough to capture my attention, and probably yours as well.
