The 4 best Neon horror movies of 2024 you absolutely must watch
We can't believe 2024 is almost over! It's been an incredible year for horror, with so many new horror movies and shows coming out. You know A24 had us covered this year with some great horror content, like the movies MaXXXine, I Saw the TV Glow and Heretic. But it wasn't the only indie film production and distribution company that was putting out horror project after horror project.
Neon, the distributor behind beloved horror movies such as The Lodge, Infinity Pool, Little Monsters, Titane and Possessor, has also delivered its fair share of the most gripping and disturbing films this year. With twists that will leave you gasping, atmospheres that will make you squirm, and stories that will haunt your thoughts long after the credits roll, here are the four best Neon horror movies of 2024 that you absolutely must watch!
Longlegs
A haunting blend of suspense and supernatural terror, Longlegs is hands down Neon's best horror movie of the year. It's a horror masterpiece that every horror fanatic should see at least once or twice. After hitting theaters in July, the horror-thriller can now be watched by renting or purchasing it on digital platforms. It will most likely be available to stream on Hulu at a later date.
Maika Monroe, who many will recognize from her starring role in It Follows, plays FBI agent Lee Harker, who is given the responsibility of tracking down a notorious occultist serial killer known as "Longlegs" before he claims more victims. Academy Award-winning actor Nicolas Cage portrays the role of Longlegs, who gives a deeply unsettling performance. Other known actors such as Blair Underwood, Alicia Witt, Kiernan Shipka, and Peter James Bryant also star in this chilling horror flick.
Immaculate
If psychological horror films are more of your vibe, you should definitely check out Immaculate on Hulu. Also, I believe that you'll enjoy this movie if you're a fan of Rosemary's Baby. It'll keep you guessing throughout with its shocking twists and turns.
Directed by Michael Mohan from a script written by Andrew Lobel, the story centers on an American nun named Sister Cecilia, who begins a new chapter of her life at a remote convent in the serene Italian countryside. However, her peaceful arrival quickly transforms into a nightmare as she uncovers the dark and unspeakable secrets hidden within the convent's walls. What starts as a spiritual journey soon turns into a fight for survival.
Euphoria's Sydney Sweeney stars in the main role as Sister Cecilia. Álvaro Morte, Benedetta Porcaroli, Dora Romano, Giorgio Colangeli, and Simona Tabasco join her in the cast.
Cuckoo
Sweeney's fellow Euphoria co-star Hunter Schafer made her horror debut this year with the genre-blending horror film Cuckoo. Like Longlegs, this Neon movie is expected to land on Hulu eventually. But for now, the only way you can watch it is by renting or buying it on digital platforms.
In Cuckoo, Schafer plays a grieving teen girl named Gretchen who, after the passing of her mother, is forced to move with her dad and sister to a secluded resort in the Bavarian Alps. But shortly after her arrival, things take a dark turn when she becomes the target of bizarre and violent attacks. This leads her to uncover dark secrets about the resort and its inhabitants.
Handling the Undead
Handling the Undead is a thought-provoking Norwegian horror mystery movie that has a disturbing premise but will keep you invested throughout. It's currently streaming on Hulu and can be rented or purchased on Amazon Prime Video, Fandango at Home, Google Play, or Apple TV+. This might not be the type of horror movie that every horror fan will enjoy, but you won't know unless you check it out for yourself.
The film takes place in Oslo, Norway, in the summertime, and we follow three families who are still grieving the loss of their loved ones. One day, their deceased loved ones mysteriously awaken, but they're not the same. They behave differently and are no longer who they once were. So, are they really back? What happened to them? Renate Reinsve, Bjørn Sundquist, Bente Børsum, Anders Danielsen Lie, Bahar Pars, and Inesa Dauksta all star in this horror flick.
