Netflix's extremely successful Korean dystopian thriller series Squid Game is coming to an end this June. Season 2 returned at the end of last year after a long wait, but fans won't have to wait years between seasons to see how this saga ends. Squid Game ends on June 27 and the streamer just shared the first teaser.
It's time to play one final game. Watch the teaser below.
Season 2 ended on a particularly tragic cliffhanger, leaving leading man Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) at his absolute lowest. Spoilers ahead. His closest friend is dead and he learns that one of his sole allies was the one orchestrating the games all along. Needless to say, we don't leave Gi-hun in a good place.
But he doesn't appear to get much time to grieve, as season 3 thrusts him and several other familiar faces back into the game. The teaser opens with several of the Squid Game guards carrying a coffin into a room and inside the coffin is Gi-hun. From there, we see the players walk into a room housing a giant gumball machine dispersing red and blue balls, each color representing some unique fate. Let the games begin!
Plenty of familiar characters will return, including The Front Man, the guard No-eul, and Detective Hwang Jungo. We'll also see the following players once again, Myung-gi (Player 333), Dae-ho (Player 388), Hyun-ju (Player 120), Yong-sik (Player 007), Geum-ja (Player 149), Jun-hee (Player 222), Min-su (Player 125), and Nam-gyu (Player 124).
However, the most ominous part of the teaser isn't even the hints at what we can expect from the next batch of games (scuba diving?), it's the moment at the end where the audio of a baby crying plays. What could that possibly mean?
The Netflix logline for season 3 teases that Gi-hun has been "driven to utter despair" after the death of his best friend, made worse by The Front Man's betrayal after he infiltrated the game in disguise. Gi-hun is more determined than ever to the end the games once and for all, but it will be more challenging than ever as these next games will have "graver consequences with each round."
Squid Game season 2 returned in December 2024, earning the most views for a series in its premiere week and quickly entering the Most Popular Non-English TV list just days after its debut. In addition to the popular script series, Netflix has also debuted a reality television spinoff series in Squid Game: The Challenge, which was renewed for a second season.
Other popular Netflix shows returning this year include Wednesday season 2 and the fifth and final season of Stranger Things.
