Spoilers ahead for The Bondsman episode 5, "Slypharis"

The Bondsman episode 5 takes a little break from demon-hunting to delve into Midge's backstory. How did Midge go from a charming little home baker to someone who helps secure employees for the Devil? It turns out that Midge was a victim herself.

Years ago, Midge's baby son was diagnosed with advanced lymphoma and was unable to afford the medical costs it would take to save his life. With no other options, she falls prey to a Pot O' Gold advertisement online that prompts her to fill out a form. A few days later, two salesmen show up and coax Midge into signing on the dotted line and placing a thumbprint in her blood.

In exchange for the Devil curing Benji completely, her new job is to recruit more people. Basically, conning desperate individuals to sign their souls for fame, fortune, or love, all as part of a twisted pyramid scheme.

Now that we have more context on Midge's backstory, we can return to what's happening with Hub. He's finally started piecing together the various demonic sacrifices, pinning his triangular drawings to a corkboard and connecting them into a pentagram. It looks like the demons are trying to perform a ritual.

But Midge doesn't want to hear about it. She's not interested in working together with Hub or doing anything that could jeopardize her son's life. She tells him how she fell behind on her quotas a few times and stopped doing her job because the guilt became too much to bear. Benji's cancer returned every time.

Midge is determined to do whatever it takes to keep her son safe, and she won't let Hub's meddling mess things up for her. Still, Hub leaves behind a file containing the drawings and his theories. We can safely assume Midge will eventually come around before the season's end.

On the demon-hunting front, Hub faces one of his most challenging pursuits yet. For the first time, Hub is after two demons, a pair of "Slypharis," known for inflicting their victims with the kiss of death. Hub has to face off against two grown men we meet in the episode's cold open.

Hub tracks the demons to a bridge where they're seen carrying the woman from the opening, intending for her to be the next sacrifice. Armed with a sniper rifle, Hub does his best to take them out from a distance, but he's interrupted by Lucky ramming his truck into Hub's car.

The episode ends with Lucky knocking Hub unconscious. Considering Hub antagonized two demons, Lucky will likely find himself in a heap of trouble come the next episode.
