The Last of Us season 2 premieres this weekend. When can you start watching the highly-anticipated new episode, and where will it be available to stream?

The post-apocalyptic series is an HBO show, meaning it will debut on the linear channel on Sunday, April 13 at 9:00 p.m. ET. HBO shows also become available to watch on Max at the same time. For the premiere, the new episode will stream at approximately 8:55 p.m. ET on the app, according to the official Max page.

In season 2, Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Joel (Pedro Pascal) feel the aftermath of the Firefly massacre at the hospital. Their relationship has been rocked as Ellie doesn't entirely believe Joel's story of what happened there during the season 1 finale. The premiere episode is titled "Future Days" and was written and directed by Craig Mazin. It has a runtime of 1 hour and 2 minutes.

The Last of Us season 2 episode schedule

  • April 13 - Season 2, Episode 1, "Future Days"
  • April 20 - Season 2, Episode 2
  • April 27 - Season 2, Episode 3
  • May 4 - Season 2, Episode 4
  • May 11 - Season 2, Episode 5
  • May 18 - Season 2, Episode 6
  • May 25 - Season 2, Episode 7

As you can see from the schedule, there are only seven episodes this season versus nine from season 1. But the good news is that HBO has already renewed The Last of Us for a third season. Showrunners Mazin and Neil Druckmann have previously said that they won't be able to adapt the entirety of the second game for season 2 and intend to split it into two, possibly three, seasons.

The Last of Us is an acclaimed drama series based on the award-winning video game series of the same name developed by Naughty Dog. Season 1 premiered in 2023 and earned 24 Emmy Award nominations and three Golden Globe noms.

Season 2 takes place five years after the events of season 1, with Joel and Ellie's past decisions catching up with them. This season introduces Abby Anderson, a major character from the second game, and Kaitlyn Dever (Apple Cider Vinegar) plays her.

Other new characters introduced this season include Isabela Merced as Dina, Danny Ramirez as Manny, Jeffrey Wright as Isaac, Young Manzino as Jesse, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, and Catherine O'Hara as a show-only character named Gail.

Don't miss The Last of Us season 2 premiere tonight on HBO, also streaming on Max—new episodes to follow every Sunday night until the May 25 finale.
