It won't be too much longer now before The Last of Us finally returns! 1428 Elm has learned that the seven-episode second season is premiering on April 13 on HBO. New episodes will also be available to stream on Max.

As fans know, The Last of Us season 2 is shaping up to be a momentous and potentially controversial installment in this post-apocalyptic universe. After season 1 of the Emmy-winning drama series covered the entirety of the first game, the second season is expected to begin tackling The Last of Us Part II.

But don't expect these next seven episodes to cover the entire second game. It has already been confirmed that the series will expand on some aspects of the game, which will mean HBO is gearing up to have The Last of Us around for at least a few more seasons.

Considering some of the significant events that happen in The Last of Us Part II, it'll be interesting to see which ones get adapted this season vs. saved for later. Perhaps the most polarizing moment in the entire second game will doubtlessly get saved for a little later so certain actors can stay around longer.

Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey will return in the leading roles of Joel and Ellie, with Gabriel Luna back as Tommy and Rutina Wesley as Maria. In addition to the returning cast, season 2 will also see a host of newcomers, notably Kaitlyn Dever as Abby and Isabela Merced as Dina. Jeffrey Wright, Tati Gabrielle, Spencer Lord, Young Mazino, Danny Ramirez, and Ariela Barer will also star. Catherine O'Hara will guest star.

Along with finally announcing the release date, HBO shared a couple of new character posters, giving fans a slightly better look at Dever as Abby, plus new Joel and Ellie posters. You can check all three of them out below.
