In 2023, Netflix released the first season of the darkly compelling mystery thriller series The Snow Girl (La chica de nieve), based on the best-selling novel Javier Castillo. The first season followed a journalist named Miren (The Platform 2 star Milena Smit) as she tried tracking down a missing girl. At the end of the season, Miren solved one mystery just to be confronted by another. The finale featured Miren receiving a mysterious envelope containing a photograph of a young woman bound and gagged.
Two years after the first season debuted, Netflix is releasing the six-episode second season of the hit Spanish series. Miren is once again on the case. This one involves another strange disappearance and a connection to an elite private school. As shown in the trailer, Miren gets sucked into this case involving the disappearance of one girl and the death of another.
The mystery also involves an urban legend referred to as "The Soul Game." But this time, Miren won't be working alone, much to her annoyance. The trailer and description reveal that she'll be joined by a new colleague who has recently started working at her newspaper, a man named Jaime (Miki Esparbé).
In the trailer, Miren is apprehensive about working alongside someone else, but it's clear she will fall down another dangerous rabbit hole in season 2. Perhaps having a partner will help keep her from getting into too much trouble.
The Snow Girl: The Soul Game is based on Castillo's follow-up novel, which reveals potential plot details for the book. It sounds like the photo Miren received at the end of season 1 was just the tip of the iceberg. In the novel, she learns that a girl was crucified in a church, and the investigation leads them to a secret institution. Is the crucifixion connected to the mysterious photo?
Watching the official trailer, it looks like The Snow Girl season 2 might be even more haunting than the first, with plenty of disturbing visuals present in the short video.
Apart from Smit and Esparbé, season 2 also stars Aixa Villagrán (The Messiah), Marco Cáceres (The Endless Trench), Hugo Welzel (El hijo zurdo), Luis Callejo (The Longest Night), Luis Bermejo (Rainbow), José Coronado (The Innocent), and Vicente Romero (La novia gitana).
Those interested in reading the book before the show can pick up a copy on Amazon and wherever books are sold, it has been translated into the English language.
All six episodes of The Snow Girl: The Soul Game begin streaming exclusively on Netflix this Friday, January 31.
