After Demi Moore won the Golden Globe for Best Actress for her role as fading movie star Elisabeth Sparkle in The Substance, writer-director Coralie Fargeat spoke with Variety the next morning to discuss the win, the film's success, and her upcoming project. That’s right—fans can look forward to another film from the French filmmaker in the future!

Before The Substance hit theaters, it had already generated a lot of buzz following its world premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, where it received a standing ovation and won the award for Best Screenplay. Then, in September 2024, the body horror finally landed in movie theaters in the U.S. and U.K. It went on to become a commercial success, ultimately grossing $78 million worldwide against a $17.5 million budget. It also garnered mainly positive reviews from critics. Most audience members enjoyed the film as well.

Although the body horror ended in a way where a sequel wouldn't be necessary, fans loved it so much that they hoped for an eventual announcement of a second film. Sadly, that announcement will never come because Fargeat has revealed that a sequel is not happening. At the 82nd Golden Globe Awards red carpet, Variety had the opportunity to speak with Fargeat and asked her about the possibility of a The Substance sequel, but she quickly dismissed the idea. She told the news outlet, "Oh no. The point of this movie is to bring fresh things to the world. No sequels, no prequels… I’m going to be so happy to bring something else fresh to the world in a bit."

Oh, whatever could she mean by "something else fresh?" Well, it looks to be her next movie. While speaking to Variety the morning after the Golden Globe win, Fargeat mentioned where she is currently regarding her next project.

"For now I’m not discussing anything. I’m just enjoying the moment and taking some time as I really want to write my next project. It’s slowly starting to be put in motion in the back of my brain and when things calm down I’ll take it from there." - Coralie Fargeat via Variety

When asked if her next project would be similar to The Substance, Fargeat remained evasive, stating that while it would be completely different, it would also share many similarities. She refrained from disclosing the genre or any plot details of her upcoming film. Fargeat has explored various genres throughout her filmmaking career, so her next project could really be anything. As of right now, it seems she's in the early stages of developing her next movie. Fingers crossed, she decides to dabble in the horror world once more!
