Are you looking for something to do this weekend? Why not trek to your nearest cinema to watch a scary movie or two? There are five new horror movie releases in theaters right now, including the latest from A24, Neon, and Blumhouse.
For those who aren't sure what they want to see, we've listed the five films playing right now and some information about what they're about!
Drop
A woman's date goes horribly wrong in this tense and stylish new thriller from Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon. Hesitant to return to the dating world after her husband's death, Violet (Meghann Fahy) is pleasantly surprised by Henry's (Brandon Sklenar) kindness and charm.
But their evening out takes a dark turn when an anonymous sender starts using AirDrop to send her menacing messages, threatening to kill her son and her sister if she doesn't obey every order, including killing her date.
Death of a Unicorn
In this A24 horror-comedy film, Elliot (Paul Rudd) and Ridley (Jenna Ortega) are on a road trip to Elliot's boss' house for a weekend retreat when they hit a unicorn foal. Unsure of what to do with the body, they put it in the car and take it to their destination. Elliot's boss is keen to experiment on the creature to potentially extract its magical healing abilities and use it to make money. But then the unicorn's mother shows up, and all hell breaks loose.
The Woman in the Yard
Drop and The Woman in the Yard are both Blumhouse releases, but they are significantly different in tone. The Woman in the Yard is a lot more somber in tone than the fast-paced thriller that is Drop. In this movie, Danielle Deadwyler plays Ramona, a grieving single mother trying to take care of her two kids, when a strange woman dressed in black appears on her front lawn.
She keeps saying, "Today's the day," warning the family that she's there to receive some kind of payment and that she can get into their house using shadows. Ramona must do whatever she can to protect her children from the spectral woman.
Hell of a Summer
One of two summer camp slashers out now, Hell of a Summer is the latest movie from Neon and it was co-directed and co-written by Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) and Billy Byrk, who also star in the film. Camp counselor Jason is in his 20s but still enjoys returning to Camp Pineway year after year, although it has become much harder for him to bond with his younger co-workers. Soon, Jason and the teens have much bigger problems to worry about when a masked killer starts picking them off one by one.
Marshmallow
Also set in a summer camp, 12-year-old Billy starts to see a terrifying figure in the woods after hearing a spooky campfire tale. When the group realizes that this "story" might actually be real after all, their survival is jeopardized. Marshmallow received a limited release, so it will only be playing in select theaters.
