Who said horror is dead? Because I'd like a word. While we might have started the year off with some not-so-great horror movies (I'm looking at you, Wolf Man), things have started to pick up with the releases of films such as Companion, Heart Eyes and The Monkey. In fact, The Monkey managed to be a box-office hit, grossing $68.5 million worldwide, surpassing its $10–11 million budget. This success has made it the highest-grossing horror film of 2025 so far. However, it looks like this horror comedy is about to lose its crown to a new contender that is currently dominating the box office.
On April 18, Warner Bros. Pictures released the vampire horror flick Sinners, and it has already grossed over $50 million worldwide in its opening weekend, quickly closing in on The Monkey’s total. As of April 21, it has accumulated a total of $61 million globally, and with its momentum showing no signs of slowing down, it’s well on track to surpass The Monkey and claim the title of the highest-grossing horror film of 2025. That's not all! The vampire horror has drawn a big enough crowd to claim the top spot at the domestic box office this past weekend, overtaking A Minecraft Movie after two solid weeks in the No. 1 spot. That's pretty impressive, if you ask me!

Other notable accomplishments include the film's nearly perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, with the actual score being 98%. As reported by Discussing Film, Sinners also had the biggest domestic opening for an original film and is the best-reviewed wide-release movie this decade. And get this! It's the first ever horror movie to receive an A CinemaScore. If you're a hardcore horror fan, you probably already know how hard CinemaScore audiences are to please, especially when it comes to horror. An “A” rating had been unheard of for the genre until Sinners, making it a true outlier and a historic moment for horror.
I saw both The Monkey and Sinners in theaters, and while I enjoyed each for different reasons, there’s just something about Sinners that sticks with you. At first glance, it might come off as your standard vampire horror flick, but it quickly proves to be so much more. With its stunning cinematography, layered storytelling, emotionally rich characters, standout performances, sharp social commentary, and thrilling action, it’s easy to see why this film is striking a chord with audiences. Sinners isn’t just a good horror movie. It's a powerful and unforgettable experience you definitely don’t want to miss. It's already one of my favorite movies of the year, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends up topping a lot of year-end best-of lists.
Sinners takes place in 1932 Mississippi, and follows two identical twin brothers who move back to their hometown to start fresh and open their own juke joint after being away in Chicago for many years working for notorious gangster Al Capone. But everything goes south the night of their grand opening when a trio of vampires arrive at the doorstep of their establishment, unleashing chaos and bloodshed. Michael B. Jordan stars in a dual role as both twins, Smoke and Stack. The talented cast is also made up of Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, Buddy Guy, Delroy Lindo, Li Jun Li, and others.
You can currently catch Sinners in a theater near you. Although not confirmed, the horror film is also expected to eventually land on Max at a later date.
