Young Sophia is the daughter of Carol and Ed Peletier. She manages to survive the first season, including escaping the CDC. But very early into Season 2, things go terribly bad for the little girl.

The group is trapped on the highway when a large herd of walkers approaches. They’re all forced to take shelter underneath cars and in similar hiding spots. This plan works swimmingly, until a zombie happens to notice Sophia hiding under a car. As it goes for her, Sophia freaks and flees the highway into the nearby woods.

Rick Grimes follows her into the brush, with two walkers hot on her tail. He manages to get ahold of her before the walkers do. But Rick doesn’t feel that it’s safe to take on both zombies at once with Sophia around. He decides it’s best if she hides while he takes them out one at a time. Rick guides Sophia to a nearby creek, telling her to hide despite her pleas for him not to leave her.

The walkers are dispatched by Rick, but being alone lets the fear get to Sophia. She takes off running again into the woods, and is gone by the time Rick returns to the creek. This begins a long search for the young girl, with the group only managing to find her doll she had apparently dropped somewhere.

However, when Shane breaks open the door to Hershel’s barn, all of the zombies inside pour out. The last one to emerge is Sophia, revealed to have been bitten and turned. It’s likely she was killed very soon after running into the woods, as she’d had to have been put in the barn before Rick’s group arrives. Although he had a chance to save her previously, Rick is now the one to put a bullet in Sophia’s head.
