Last Words: “I’m a better father than you, Rick. I’m better for Lori than you, man. It’s ’cause I’m a better man than you, Rick. ‘Cause I can be here and I’ll fight for it. You come back here and you just destroy everything! You got a broken woman, you got a weak boy, you ain’t got the first clue on how to fix it. Raise your gun.”

After tensions between Rick and Shane had been boiling for this entire season of The Walking Dead, it all comes to a head. Shane kills Randall, keeping his death a secret, luring Rick into the woods to “find” him. He leads Rick far enough away from the group, where he plans to execute him.

During their final showdown, Shane reveals his motive for killing Rick. He feels Rick is weak and will only get Lori and Carl killed. In Shane’s mind, the right thing to do is to just take Rick out, as only Shane can properly take care of Rick’s family. But Shane has problems shooting an unarmed man, ordering Rick to raise his weapon.

Instead, Rick pretends to offer his gun to Shane, refusing to draw on him. Upon getting close enough, Rick then drives a knife straight into Shane’s heart. Shane bleeds out soon after, succumbing to the wound. Carl witnesses the event and puts down Shane after he turns into a zombie.
