The horror genre has scored big this year when it comes to Oscar nominations. Four standout horror films from 2024 have been nominated for this prestigious award, showcasing the rising recognition of horror as a respected and influential genre in the film industry.

The horror flicks that were nominated in various categories this year are The Substance, Nosferatu, Alien: Romulus and The Girl with the Needle. The Substance received the most Oscar nominations out of all four with its five nominations. The body horror was nominated in the categories of "Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role," "Best Director," "Best Picture," Best Original Screenplay," and "Best Makeup and Hairstyling."

Nosferatu came in second with four Oscar nominations. Additionally, the sci-fi horror flick Alien: Romulus managed to snag an Oscar nomination for "Best Visual Effects," while the Danish horror film The Girl with the Needle scored a nomination in the category "Best International Feature Film."

Nosferatu

As a remake to Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922), Nosferatu follows a young woman named Ellen Hutter, who is tormented by a centuries-old vampire who becomes dangerously obsessed with her. Bill Skarsgård, Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, and Willem Dafoe join her in the cast.

Alien: Romulus

The Girl with the Needle

The Girl with the Needle is a psychological horror film that takes place in post-World War I Copenhagen. It stars Vic Carmen Sonne as Karoline, a young, expectant mother who begins working at an underground adoption agency run by a seemingly kind woman named Dagmar. While they initially bond, things change when Karoline soon discovers that Dagmar's operations are far more sinister than they appear.

Joining Sonne in the cast as Dagmar is well-known Danish actress Trine Dyrholm. The rest of the cast includes Besir Zeciri, Joachim Fjelstrup, Tessa Hoder, Avo Knox Martin, Anders Hove, and Ari Alexander.

Last but not least is Dune: Part Two, which can be streamed on Max or Netflix with a subscription.
