While many fans of the talented actress Rachel Zegler are gearing up for her portrayal of Snow White in Disney's long-awaited live-action film releasing this month, there's another Zegler film to look forward to in April for horror fans! One of A24's most recent horror movies, Y2K is finally making its way to streaming early next month.

Last year, the actress starred in the nostalgia-drenched slasher Y2K, a movie about the cusp of the new era, the last night of 1999 during a time when everyone was paranoid catastrophe would strike when all of the technology switched over to the year 2000.

A sci-fi disaster comedy, Y2K centers on a group of best friends attending a huge party on New Years. But then the technology seems to take on a life of its own and begins killing the partygoers, leading to total chaos. The movie comes from Saturday Night Live vet Kyle Mooney who directed the film and co-wrote it with Evan Winter.

The film stars several notable horror faces like Scream star Mason Gooding and Jaeden Martell, who played Bill Denbrough in both It movies. Stranger Things actor Eduardo Franco is also among the cast.

Imagine trying to have a fun night with your friends when all of the sudden a Tamagotchi goes rogue or your VHS player turns evil. Anyone who grew up in the 2000s is bound to enjoy this movie purely for the nostalgia factor. It's fun to see all of the classic Y2K hairstyles, fashion, and all the gadgets and gizmos we grew up with, like the aforementioned Tamagotchi (does anyone still have theirs?).

What did reviewers have to say?

This A24 flick initially debuted at last year's South by Southwest (SXSW) festival and then released theatrically in December. Unfortunately, it didn't earn the best reviews and ultimately became a box office disappointment failing to make back its $15 million budget. Still, if you're into these sorts of movies and especially if you're a '90s baby, Y2K is worth watching as it's overall pretty fun and enjoyable even if it doesn't rank among the best A24 horror movies of all time.

Frequent critical responses cited the movies missed potential and failure to really make something new and inventive out of its unique premise. Others mentioned that the movie sometimes feels like one of Mooney's late-night show sketches that ends up going on too long and attempting to smash together one too many genres in a way that lacks cohesion.

On the flip side, positive reviews praised the movie for its wild gore and great comedy throughout the film, remarking that it's a really fun coming-of-age horror movie, particularly for those who get the nostalgia of it all.

Y2K officially makes its streaming debut on Friday, April 4, exclusively on Max. For those who still like to watch movies the linear way you can also watch it on the regular HBO channel on Saturday, April 5, at 8:00 p.m.

If you don't want to wait until April, the movie is now available on digital and physical.
