Zach Cregger has been on one helluva run for the past few years, and it doesn’t look like he’s showing signs of slowing down anytime soon. The man is very much in his imperial era, simultaneously operating at an artistic high point and crafting work that is engaging audiences in financially lucrative ways.

Barbarian was a hit, Weapons was massive just last year, and now his Resident Evil film is poised to become yet another breakout horror sensation. This has kept the writer-director very busy for the last few years, as he’s essentially gone from writing one project to directing it and then straight into the next several times over. And now, he’s gearing up to do it again, as he’s going straight from the release of Resident Evil into mounting a new production with none other than Steven Spielberg on board.

The film, titled Flood, has been shrouded in mystery up until now, with little revealed other than its title and the fact that Cregger had written the script, was planning to direct, and that Spielberg would be producing. However, in a recent interview, Cregger revealed a bit more about the project and precisely how the whole thing came about.

When asked whether or not Flood was a horror film, Cregger responded, “I don’t care about genre. I just care about whatever idea I have. So I don’t think in terms of, 'What genre should I tackle?’ I just hope I get a good idea, and whatever that idea is, that’s enough. So I just happen to resonate the strongest lately with genre fair…"

He went on to elaborate that, “Flood, I kind of came up with the idea because I was very excited to work with Steven Spielberg, and we had a weird situation where there was a short window of time where I could have an idea and we could link up together… I was just like ‘I’ve got to have an idea for Steven Spielberg!’ And then I was watching this movie, and somebody in the movie I was watching was entering an abandoned spaceship. And my wife was like, ‘There’s nothing scarier than being trapped in space.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, that’s interesting. Maybe there’s something there…' It’s never happened to me before, but in a flash, I had the whole movie explode in front of my eyes.”

This is not only a fascinating glimpse into Cregger’s creative process but also reveals some unexpectedly crucial details about Flood. For one, it’s clearly science-fiction-related and very likely to be set in space, something that certainly jives with Spielberg’s own genre sensibilities. But beyond that, it sounds like the film will still very much have a grounding in the horror genre, with much of the inspiration for the film’s story stemming from Cregger marinating on the scariest things he could think up in an outer space setting.

That all sounds great, and very much like the kind of thing I’ll be seeing as soon as humanly possible. Sign me up.
