Fall Horror TV Preview 2015
By Teresa Lobos
The Leftovers
When: Sunday, October 4th at 9:00 p.m.
Where: HBO
What is it?: Damon Lindelof, co-creator of the series we love to hate, Lost, brings us an HBO drama that focuses on a suburban town whose lives are shattered in the wake of a global event dubbed “The Departure” (which may or may not have been the Biblical “rapture,” though that is left ambiguous). After The Departure, in which some people were taken and many others left behind, those who remain must find a way to carry on, despite never knowing exactly what happened to their disappeared loved ones. Based on the bestselling 2011 novel by Tom Perrotta (who also steps in as co-creator and EP), the series focuses on the fictional town of Mapleton, three years after the fateful October 14 day when 140 million people – 2% of the world’s population – vanished without a trace. Seen primarily through the eyes of beleaguered police chief Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux), the series shows how ordinary people react to inexplicable events that can unite or divide families and communities, revealing how the strain of an unprecedented calamity can turn people’s faith into cynicism, paranoia, madness, or cult-like fanaticism.
Are we excited?: The first season was excellent if remarkably depressing and pretty much exhausted the source material so what will season 2 be? Pulling up stakes and moving to Texas while leaving half the cast behind. Hopefully the move will allow the producers to let a little sunshine in for the Garvey family.
Binge, purge or savor? Savor your tears as you realize that life is pointless and without hope.
