Top Five Awesome Cameos in Awful Horror Films
By Jeremy Dick
1. Hulk Hogan in Gremlins 2: The New Batch
Gremlins is a cult classic horror film, and rightfully so. It had elements of comedy, but the tone was mostly quite dark in this very unique movie. Unfortunately, the sequel was presented as a much more cartoonish version of the Gremlins story and was pumped full of nothing but self-parody and sight gags. There’s humor to be found in its campiness, but the film couldn’t be considered any more than mediocre at best.
The advantage Gremlins 2 has over every other horror movie ever made, though, is an in-character appearance by the immortal Hulk Hogan. In an attempt to get the audience more involved with the film, the theatrical release included a scene where the movie itself is interrupted by rowdy gremlins in the projection booth. That’s when an usher asks for the help of a moviegoer that turns out to be none other than Hulk Hogan, who apparently wears his wrestling outfit everywhere— even the movies. Hogan cuts an excellent promo on the rambunctious gremlins, which scares them into getting Gremlins 2 back on track. At first, I wonder why not every scary movie could have Hulk Hogan showing up to intimidate the killers, but then I realize that it’d make each of those films over in about two minutes.
Did I miss anything? What are some other excellent cameo appearances in otherwise horrible horror movies?
