‘The Walking Dead’ Game Provides Solution For Old Save Files

Telltale Games is now confirming an easy way to continue your old save files for Seasons 1 and 2 of The Walking Dead game series, even if you’ve lost or deleted it!

I love Telltale’s The Walking Dead video game series probably more than anything else in this world. With the new season coming on December 20, my excitement was shooting through the roof… until I thought of something. I played through Seasons 1 and 2 on the PS3, meaning I couldn’t continue my same primary save file. I’ve since switched over to the Xbox One, and Season 3 isn’t even available for download on PS3 anyway.

I’m aware that Telltale has released the past seasons on the newer consoles. So was I going to have to purchase them both again? Did I need to binge-play through the whole story again before December 20, making all of the exact same choices? As I was saying, I absolutely love this game series. But spending more money to rush through a carbon copy of my previous playthrough wasn’t something I was anticipating.

Fortunately, Telltale has excellent news for people like me. We’re going to get to jump into the new season without having to buy or replay the game again. And we don’t even need to go through the hassle of actually transferring over old save data! Though, you can still do so if you want.

At the start of A New Frontier, you can choose how to start the story. Newcomers to the series can select to “Start New Story”. This default setting uses the scenario of Clementine losing everyone at the end of Season 2, being left alone with AJ.

When it comes to continuing old saves, however, we have two options. If you no longer have your old save data, or don’t want to deal with the process of transferring it over, here’s the simple solution. A “Story Generator” will ask you 42 questions about your past season playthroughs, including choices you’ve made and Clementine’s behavior.

To actually transfer your old save file over from a last gen console, or from one device to another, you can utilize Telltale’s new cloud save file system. Here’s how they explain it:

"We’ve recently updated Season Two (on all platforms) to include Telltale Cloud Saves. You’ll need to update your app, launch Season Two and create a Telltale Account (if you don’t already have one). Then you can enable Cloud Saves and upload your Season Two save to the cloud. When you launch Season Three, you’ll be able to login to your Telltale Account and download the Cloud Save."

This works across all platforms, as well. You can completely migrate your story from any one device to another. That means I can continue my PS3 save file on my Xbox One. I can’t tell you how happy that makes me to continue my personal version of Clementine’s story, which has been going on since 2012.
