By Aaron Posey
With the release of the plot details by Thomas Jane of the new film The Predator, The Shadow Nation podcast has also been thrust into the forefront with most articles crediting the show with breaking the details.
1428 Elm was recently able to get an exclusive interview with Shaun Burris of The Shadow Nation. The show has an impressive past catalog of guests with horror heavyweights that include Dee Wallace, Tom Woodruff, Derek Mears, Kane Hodder and Dan Aykroyd. Burris and co host Nathan Schoonover are doing something right.

1428 Elm: For those that are just finding you and your fantastic show, how would you describe what you do for the uninitiated?
Shaun: Shadow Nation strives to bring you the best in Hollywood Horror and the paranormal as nobody else can. I think our show, the way we interview, has led to so many epic interviews because we don’t pretend. We work our assess off to get the honor of sitting down to talk to some of the best in films and television. We do it for the love of the game not the fame. We truly want to know the things about our guests that connect with us all. Being real is the great equalizer with everybody. If you are real and mix that with good questions, sometimes magic will happen.
Not only does your show bring some of the top talent in industry you also discuss the paranormal and things that go bump in the night. Is there anything specifically that has happened in your life that made you become interested in horror or the paranormal?
I grew up on American horror. A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, The Exorcist, and of course the epic television series The Twilight Zone and Tales from the Darkside. That coupled with the fact that I lived with a dead lady.
Dead lady?
Growing up our house was extremely haunted. Until I was about 12 years old I thought the lady that lived upstairs with the black eyes was just a person renting the attic. After years of bed sheets being pulled, whispers on the stairs, and sightings we finally moved to a new place. But my love of all things horror was forever burnt in my soul.

What is the one horror movie that terrified you?
The Exorcist! The Exorcist not only scares you with the gore and creep factor that you see on the screen, but it scares you mentally with the things you don’t see but know are there.
If you could pick anyone, past or present from the horror genre to sit down and interview for the show who would it be?
Jack Nicholson and Lon Chaney Jr. Both men have the unmatched skill of bringing the best horrific performances just by being silent with nothing more than a look. A true dying skill in today’s films. One of my favorite quotes from Shadow Nation interviews over the years we have done was the original late night horror host Sammy Terry in Indianapolis. He told us, “The problem with Hollywood is they think horror has to be horrible. True horror is what you don’t see. Real horror is in your mind.”
What can fans expect to see in the near future from The Shadow Nation or do you guys have any projects you’re working on?
Nate and I always have something we are working on it seems. Recently I did an episode of Destination America for TLC entitled Evil Things. Another cool project I am creating as part of a team. It includes Brandon Peters from Cult Cinema Cavalcade, Brad Shoemaker of Creative Zombie Studios and Michelle Amber Suter is a new podcast called Don’t Flinch Podcast (A Horror Anthology). I am very excited for this project. I think it will be a new approach to the art of legendary horror radio broadcasts from the golden age. We are currently doing an indie kick off campaign to help raise funding.
We certainly appreciate taking the time to speak with us. Anything you want to add?
Don’t go changing America, you know we won’t. We love ya!
