When I was in Los Angeles I had the pleasure of chatting with Ray Santiago again. In my interview we discuss Pablo’s spiritual transformation, the possibility of a love triangle and the specter of the Necronomicon. Gear up for Ash vs Evil Dead Season 3!

The Road of Destiny

When we last left Pablo in Season 2, he was picking up the pieces after sending a demon back to hell, dying and being resurrected. This year, things appear to be normal in Elk Grove. He has achieved his dreams but the good times are not going to last.

Evil is back, baby. Like a moth to a flame, Pablo is unfortunately very attuned to it because of his bonding with the Necronomicon. However, it is because this happened that he’s realizing his destiny and a talent that he never knew he possessed.

Let’s go on this journey with Ray Santiago as he gives us the lowdown on Season 3.

1428 Elm: Ray, how does Pablo discover his Brujo especial powers? We know he was part of the Necronomicon but this seems like this is his awakening. What triggered it? How did he figure out he could walk between worlds?

Ray Santiago: He gets to this crossroads because good and evil is really taking over his body. Pablo is struggling to understand what this relationship with the Necronomicon is going to be and can he control it. Clearly, he cannot.

Somehow, someway, the Kandarian dagger plays a part in taking him to this other dimension where he meets his uncle. One can say that it’s a place between life and death. It’s the moment where he has to step it up to be strong.

That whole Brujo especial thing, we could really argue that it is him going someplace and he is just coming back to reality. Like no, I have this in the bag. I have been running from my family and they are trying to tell me that maybe I am closer to the person that I think I am.

This entire time I have been training with Ash because I have something in me that is strong enough to fight evil. I just need to stop running from it and just deal with it. Pablo has to make a decision on what path to take.

He becomes like Angel (David Boreanaz from Buffy) in a sense.  In that he could be good or he could be evil, he just has to control it. What will happen throughout the season we will see if I use my powers for the good of the team or if I am against the team.

1428 Elm: Let’s discuss you and Brandy. Is there an attraction there? If so, how weird is it because Pablo idolizes Ash to a certain degree and does that lend itself to tension between him and El Jefe?

RS: The truth is everybody sort of gravitates to Jefe. You see how the ladies are so clearly his offspring would have that same kind of vibe as well. That’s where the attraction for me came from.

You know how much time Pablo has spent with Kelly and Ash? Throw in a new girl and a new guy can you blame us for trying to get ours?  You know what I mean? The only person that is getting laid on our show is Ash and he’s the old man!

(At this point, Arielle Carver-O’Neill interjects and says, “That’s why I’m here!”)

I need another bedroom.  I live in that trailer home!

1428 Elm: In the trailer, Ruby gets a chainsaw up the middle courtesy of Ash. Do you have any major run-ins with her as Pablo? There is a history there since she tortured him in Season 2 and used him as a vessel to deliver her demon spawn.  Can we expect more of that, Ray?

RS: Unfortunately, you don’t get to see that this season. I was bummed because I was really looking forward to spending time with Lucy on set. No, most of my stuff is not with her.

I am looking for her. I am definitely around and I’m there for that scene that you mentioned with Ash. But I don’t get tortured the way I did last year, not by her.

1428 Elm: Does somebody else torture you this year?

RS: Possibly, yes.

Wow! The new season already sounds exciting and full of potential surprises coming out of left field. According to most of the cast, nothing will be the same in Elk Grove and things you thought were true may in fact, be the opposite.
