Celebrate this Mother’s Day weekend by watching these five entertaining killer mom movies to, from gory to scary to funny.
Mother’s Day weekend is finally here. The one where over 15 million Hallmark cards are sold and delivered to moms across the country (also, the third largest card sending holiday period). For horror lovers, it’s just another excuse to watch their favorite genre. Maybe even a reason to carefully curate some films. Killer Mom might sound like a Lifetime movie (oh, wait, it is!), but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t give killer mom movies their due respect.
If you’re spending the holiday with mom, she may not be the blood and gore type. For her, a dark comedy like Serial Mom might fare better. For the more adventurous mamas, give the ultra nutty Mom and Dad a whirl. And for those dealing with repressed issues, a viewing of Mommie Dearest is always a good idea.
Here are 5 killer mom movies to enjoy this Mother’s Day weekend!

1. Mrs. Voorhees – Friday the 13th
This week marked the anniversary of the original Friday the 13th film’s release. It’s only fitting that horror fans celebrate Mother’s Day with what’s technically the ultimate in all killer mom movies. While the Friday the 13th franchise is known for a hockey mask wielding killer, it’s mommy who stole the show in part one.
Faye Dunaway as Joan Crawford in Mommie Dearest, courtesy of Paramount Pictures
2. Joan Crawford – Mommie Dearest
The movie, based on the book by Cristina Crawford, depicts mental and physical abuse at the hands of her famous mother. Faye Dunaway’s depiction of Joan Crawford and her relationship with her adopted daughter still falls into the killer mom movies. She might not have actually killed anyone, but her notorious wrath towards wire hangers would scare anything to death.
Kathleen Turner as Beverly in Serial Mom, courtesy of Savoy Pictures
3. Kathleen Turner – Serial Mom
Less scary and more funny, Serial Mom is John Waters’ brilliant play with horror. Kathleen Turner is the all american mom who also happens to be a serial killer. And her methods of murder are so crazy, they’re hilarious.
Laurie Metcalf as Mrs. Loomis in Scream 2, courtesy of Dimension Films
4. Mrs. Loomis – Scream 2
It’s been a big year for Laurie Metcalf so it makes sense to reflect on some other gems she created. She might currently be getting praise for her Broadway roles. But it’s her turn as the vengeful Mrs. Loomis in Scream 2 that for many, still steals the show.

Selma Blair in Mom and Dad, courtesy of Momentum Pictures
5. Selma Blair – Mom and Dad
The 2018 movie’s a wild ride from start to finish, starring Selma Blair in one of the craziest killer mom movies to date. Oh, and Nic Cage as her murderous husband and father to their kids. Something is in the air, and its making parents want to kill their children. Signature Cage movements and antics run rampant but it’s Blair’s turn as subdued mom turned psycho that steals the show.
