American Horror Story – The Chaos of Outpost 3

Well, just as last week’s episode didn’t fail to surprise us with its level of intensity, Forbidden Fruit keeps up the frenetic tempo that American Horror Story: Apocalypse seems to be running on, straight over a cliff into absolute insanity.

We see that because of who Michael Langdon actually is, he’s been making promises to everyone in Outpost 3, when we should know all too well that at least some of these promises are not going to be kept. Then, Langdon meets with Mallory. He tells her that he has the ability to go to the darkest places in a person’s soul.

“I have no dark places,” Mallory tells him, going on to explain that even though Coco is a total pain, she’s absolutely helpless and wouldn’t be able to survive without her. Langdon is attempting to convince her that she wants to kill Coco, but Mallory doesn’t bite.

Towards the end of their meeting, Mallory says that “I feel like there’s someone inside me, just clawing to get out”. Langdon then shows his true face, to which Mallory responds with some kind of psychic energy, throwing fire up everywhere.

This is the first time something such as this has happened to Mallory.  Mallory goes on to explain this to Coco and Mr. Gallant when Coco is preparing for the Halloween party, but Coco and Mr. Gallant both think she’s crazy.

Speaking of Halloween parties, another horse-drawn carriage, horses wearing gas masks of course, arrives at Outpost 3, but I’m getting way ahead of myself. Remember when I said in my first episode recap that I hope Billy Eichner’s character, Brock, returns? Well, in our first look at the outside world, we see him, looking like the star of the next Mad Max movie. He has lost hair and gained tumors and disease, but somehow, Brock has made it thus far, in an attempt to find Coco.

We see how bleak things really are for the ones who didn’t get the option of an outpost. Two men are cooking another man’s leg for food, one being a former contestant of Top ChefBrock approaches them, asking if they knew anything about the outpost. They don’t believe him and when the possibility comes that a fight might occur, Brock kills both of the men. His search continues.

Hey, Dad?

NOW…back to the horse-drawn carriage. The Cooperative sent the carriage with some apples to Outpost 3. Miriam, Wilhelmina, and the most notable Outpost 3 guard (played by Erika Ervin or “Amazon Eve” who starred in American Horror Story: Freakshow) hear the alarm go off that occurs when the outpost has been breached. Our guard goes outside and finds that there’s nothing but a black case inside the carriage. Underneath the carriage, however, is Brock.

Miriam, Wilhelmina, and the guard find the case, and once inside, they check it with the Geiger counter. It isn’t radioactive. They open it. It’s full of apples. There’s a brief discussion about how these apples could have survived, but Ms. Venable eats one and claims it’s delicious. The guard is sent outside to tend to the horses, and while out there, Brock stabs her and  sneaks into the outpost undetected.

Langdon was very confused at what happened in his room with Mallory. So, he begins a blood ritual to contact his father, which is, you know, not just Tate, but also Satan. He tells dear old dad that Mallory is the last of a kind he thought were all gone. I’m assuming we’ll find out next week what this means. Of course, because of who Langdon’s daddy is, snakes start coming out of the blood pentagram that Michael is kneeling in, and he seems to be happy for the moment.

Ms. Meade and Ms. Venable decide that in order to secure their spots in the sanctuary, they should just kill…everyone, including Langdon. How? By poisoning all the apples with snake venom. How is this going to happen? Well, there’s going to be a Halloween party, of course. Ms. Venable announces the party at dinner and everyone is thrilled. Coco St. Pierre Vanderbilt is dressing up as Marie Antoinette which is extremely apropos.

Is This the End?

When at the party, a masked stranger approaches Coco and asks her to dance. She’s sure that it’s Langdon and, to claim her spot in the sanctuary, she offers him something that I’m quite sure has never been said on non-premium cable before. The man’s mask is incredible. It’s a black bird like mask with a black cape and suit. While saying more dirty stuff to the man in the room she ends her sentence with “but I have to warn you, I have a short tongue and a bad gag reflex.” From behind the mask we hear a voice say “I know”.

The masked man was not Langdon, it was Brock. Coco tries to cover her tracks and say that she missed him so much, etc, etc. However, Brock didn’t really care obviously because he stabs her right in the middle of the forehead. Bye Coco!

Meanwhile, at the party, it’s time to bob for apples! Ms. Venable tells everyone that they have to eat their apples at the exact same time. When they do, they all start throwing up, violently. It isn’t long before everyone is dead on the floor, except for Ms. Venable, Ms. Meade, and Michael Langdon…well, and Brock, but they don’t know that.

More from American Horror Story

Ms. Venable and Ms. Meade walk to Langdon’s office while most of the viewers are probably thinking (I know I was) WHAAAAT….so…everyone’s dead? Just like that? The answer is yes, and the plan that Ms. Meade and Ms. Venable had before ended with Mr. Langdon being the next to go. When they enter his room, they both find out that Langdon had used them to do what he had already wanted to do. Since Miriam is actually a robot, everything in her mind is programmed, but she never really knew by who, until now.

At the moment when Miriam attempts to shoot Mr. Langdon, her hand and gun are forced into Wilhelmina’s direction, shooting and killing someone to whom she had always been loyal.

“I programmed you to be loyal to her,” Langdon says. He also explains that the reason that Miriam couldn’t remember “the beautiful boy” she helped take care of as a baby is because it was him. Langdon programmed and designed her after the only woman he didn’t hate growing up. I’m guessing this is not Constance, so who then? Moira? Vivien? Mrs. Montgomery? I guess we’ll have to wait and find out.

  • Always the Questions

Then, at the very end of the episode, we see three shadowy figures emerge from the darkness outside. As they walk towards the outpost, the figures become clear and FINALLY we have some visitors from American Horror Story: Coven. Cordelia Foxx, who is of course also played by Sarah Paulson, Myrtle Snow, played by Frances Conroy, and last but certainly not least Madison Montgomery, played by Emma Roberts.

If you’re like me, you probably have some questions. Like, wasn’t Myrtle burned at the stake….twice? Also, didn’t Madison go to hell? The questions are vaguely answered by the last scene in the episode where Cordelia tells the women to go find “their sisters”. There were four “main” women, not counting all the other grays that we didn’t meet, but the women we knew were Emily, Coco St. Pierre Vanderbilt, Dinah Stevens, and Mallory.

Out of these four, only three of their bodies were chosen and now lie before the three members of the coven. Cordelia casts a spell and they all wake up. Madison Montgomery leans over in front of Mallory, who is shocked that she’s alive and says “Surprise bitch, I bet you thought you’d never see me again!” She’s really saying it to the whole audience.

I’m very excited to see the storyline on how the old Coven gang got back together and how this is going to effect our little AntiChrist, Langdon. We’ll find out next week in “Could It Be…Satan?” Bonus points if you get that reference! See you next week!
