Mark your calendars for these October 2018 horror happenings

October is great. Partly because there are always really great horror movies and tv shows released during the month of Halloween.  Last year, I did a fantastic job of checking out a lot of new movies and tv shows, so I am trying to stay on top of it this year as well.  If you are looking for creepy things to watch this October, here are some suggestions!

October Must See List

Friday, Oct. 5

Into the Dark (Hulu) – Hulu will release one new episode of this 12- episode horror anthology per month, and each month’s offering will center around a holiday contained within that month.  So, October’s episode will be about Halloween (of course), November’s will honor Thanksgiving, and December’s plot will center around Christmas.

The Halloween episode is titled The Body, and tells the story of a hitman who is trying to conceal the body of his latest hit in plain sight.  Into The Dark is brought to us by the masterminds at Blumhouse.

An interesting fact about this series is that the episodes will function as feature length movies. The Body clocks in at a 1 hour and 30 minute run time. Written by Paul Davis and Paul Fischer and directed by Davis, the segment stars Tom Bateman, Rebecca Rittenhouse , Aurora Perrineau, David Hull and Ray Santiago.

There is quite a bit of buzz surrounding this production. In our interview with Ray Santiago last summer, he told us to expect an “80’s really culty, Prom Night type of feel.”

Malevolent (Netflix) – Malevolent is a Netflix original film about a brother and sister “ghost hunting” team, who fake their abilities for profit.  When they are asked to investigate an orphanage, they may be experiencing their first actual haunting.

The Walking Dead Season 9 (AMC) – For me, TWD has lost some of its luster, but out of love for the series, I will definitely be tuning in.  This is to be Andrew Lincoln’s last season, and it seems that Lauren Cohan’s days are numbered as well.

Apostle (Netflix) – Another Netflix original, Apostle is about Thomas Richardson, whose sister has been kidnapped by a religious cult.  Thomas digs into the history of the cult and goes to the remote island she is being held at, determined to save his sister.  Word on the street indicates that this is a super-bloody movie.

The Haunting of Hill House (Netflix) – Netflix is a powerhouse this month, delivering one of the most anticipated horror series in recent years.  I am super-psyched about this one!  I loved the novel and the original 1963 film (The Haunting), and was hugely disappointed in the 1999 remake.  But, advance reviews say this 10-episode series is scary and compelling.

Light As A Feather (Hulu) – This 10-episode series tells of five girls who start experiencing supernatural (and super scary) events after a game of “Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board.”  It’s based on a popular Wattpad story by Zoe Aarsen.

Charmed (The CW) – I never actually watched the original version of this reboot, but if you were a fan, you should give it a shot!  As in the original series, our main characters are three sisters who find out that they are witches.

Haunted (Netflix) – Here we go again, another Netflix original series!  This one is a blend of real-life interviews and dramatic re-enactments, dealing with real life haunting / haunted cases.  As a part-time paranormal investigator and former ghost tour guide, I am personally looking forward to seeing this.

Lore (Amazon Prime) – Lore returns to Amazon Prime for its second season, consisting of six episodes.  For the uninitiated, Lore is based on the podcast of the same name, and explores legends and how they intermix with real stories.  For example, the first season included the story and legend of Robert The Doll out of Key West.

Halloween (in theaters) – The holy grail of horror movies gets a direct sequel 40 years after the original was released, and am I excited about this?  That’s a big YES!  I saw the first Halloween in a movie theater as a teenager, and was enthralled with it for life.  I was never a fan of any of the sequels (the one I liked best was H20, mainly because of Jamie Lee Curtis), so I was thrilled to hear that not only does this include the great Jamie Lee Curtis, it also ignores the horrid sequels.  I actually teared up when I saw the first trailer.  I may take the 19th off work to see Laurie Strode confront Michael Myers.

Legacies (The CW) – This is a spinoff series of The Originals, telling the story of a teenage girl attending an exclusive school populated with witches, vampires and werewolves.

Summer of 84 (Shudder) – Streaming exclusively on Shudder, Summer of 84  takes advantage of the nostalgia wave generated by Stranger Things.  A small town in Oregon is subjected to a serial killer who preys on teenage boys.  Davey becomes convinced that his next door neighbor is the killer, and he and his friends begin to investigate.  I am looking forward to this one, it has some good reviews.

Suspiria (in theaters) – Suspiria was perhaps the best known film by the great Dario Argento, and this remake is described as a “re-imagining” of the original.  The plot involves an American ballerina who goes to Germany to attend a well-known ballet school, only to find herself involved in murder and supernatural events.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Netflix original) – Netflix premiers their new series, a darker version of Archie comics’ Sabrina the Teenage Witch.  I was not initially excited about this one, but there has been some positive advance buzz.  Word has it that it’s very creepy, so maybe I will check it out.

Tell Me a Story (CBS All Access) – This web series tells well known fairy tales with a dark twist.  This first season mashes up Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, and The Three Little Pigs.
