Evil Dead 2 from Fede Alvarez: Don’t hold your breath
Evil Dead 2 keeps coming up among fans as the next project they would like to see from director Fede Alvarez. In a recent chat with Movie Web, that is probably not going to be his next move.
Evil Dead 2 has been a hot topic for fans of the franchise ever since Ash vs Evil Dead was cancelled at STARZ. The concept came into focus again when Bruce Campbell announced that he was hanging up the chainsaw for good.
In a recent interview with Movie Web, the director talked about the possibility of Evil Dead 2. This past summer he tweeted to his fans and asked them what sequel should he make Don’t Breathe 2 or Evil Dead 2. Of course, more people responded with ED2.
While it is terrific that there is an interest in keeping the Sam Raimi franchise relevant, the fact of the matter is this is probably not going to come to fruition in the immediate future. Alvarez is extremely busy.
Currently, he has The Girl in the Spider’s Web promotion to do now that the film is poised to hit theaters on Nov.9. It was also noted in Fandango that Fede had lunch with Lisa Henson recently to discuss Labyrinth 2 and he revealed there is a finished script. However, he didn’t commit to saying whether or not the film was going into pre-production.
During the course of his conversation with Movie Web, the director stated:
"“We were having some internal debates about what people would be interested in most. Unfortunately, Evil Dead 2 won. Which, I guess I would have preferred Don’t Breathe 2 to win because it’s one of my own creations.”"
While ED2 won in the fan poll, that doesn’t mean that Alvarez is going to immediately jump into the director’s chair. He intimated that he might produce a sequel to his Jane Levy starrer but not direct it. However, he did disclose an enlightening piece of information.
There is a finished script for Don’t Breathe 2 and there isn’t a script for Evil Dead 2. He also went on to say:
"“Once I’m done with [The Girl in the Spider’s Web] we’re gonna start thinking of ways to bring that story (Don’t Breathe 2) to the screen. Me directing or me producing. It really depends on the time that we’ll have.”"
While ED2 may eventually happen, it won’t be until the future. There is quite a bit to be accomplished before that project could move forward. A script would have to be written first and foremost. So, fans of the Raimi franchise will have to remain patient. You never know what the future will bring.
