Unsolved Mysteries is coming back to the small screen courtesy of Netflix. Since the announcement, we have been thinking of possible candidates to host this latest incarnation. Join us in the fun!

Unsolved Mysteries is getting the reboot treatment from Netflix. So, we decided to jump into the game and give our list of possible candidates to step into the late, great Robert Stack’s shoes. It is going to be tough but we think there are some actors out there that are up to the challenge.

Some of our choices are a little offbeat but we were trying to match the gravitas that Stack brought to the true crime series. Each of these actors is very accomplished and well known. See what you think of our wish list.

The Wish List

5. Rutger Hauer

PARK CITY, UT – JANUARY 27: Actor Rutger Hauer attends the “Life In A Day” Q&A at the Eccles Center Theatre during the 2011 Sundance Film Festival on January 27, 2011 in Park City, Utah. (Photo by George Pimentel/Getty Images)

Rutger Hauer is a beloved figure in both the horror and sci-fi communities. His work in Blade Runner is beyond compare. He has the right stature and the ability to command attention.

The actor has worked in television many times so we know he isn’t opposed to the medium. Another necessary element that Robert Stack brought to the table as the host of Unsolved Mysteries is the fact that he was sort of creepy. But that was perfect for the nature of the true crime show.

Hauer also has the ability to be unnerving and that slight edge could work in his favor. Part of the reason why audiences tune into this type of fare is because they love the unexplained and the unusual. This is right in the actor’s wheelhouse. Just take a look at The Hitcher and you will see what we mean.

Plus, he would be a natural fit for the iconic trenchcoat that Robert Stack sported. Of course, he is older now but that would only assist his credibility as a host.

4. Kyle MacLachlan

This Twin Peaks superstar has already proven as Agent Dale Cooper that he can wear the necessary wardrobe for Unsolved Mysteries. Another thing he has in common with Stack is that they both played FBI agents. Stack was Eliot Ness in the 50’s show, The Untouchables.

While those are just surface reasons why MacLachlan would be an ideal host for this reboot, he is able to play serious and he also has the right amount of sincerity that would make you want to pick up the phone and call in a tip if you had one.

Yes, his work with director David Lynch also showcases his darker side. Which as we pointed out with Rutger Hauer would also act in his favor when reporting on those weird cases.

3. Ted Raimi

This veteran character actor is always a fan favorite. Ted is no stranger to mysteries or anything strange and unusual. He maintains a blog and used to have a YouTube show called Deathly Spirits where he regaled audiences with different spooky tales much like the old-time radio shows.

Raimi is known for his roles in Evil Dead 2, Xena: Warrior Princess and Ash vs Evil Dead plus countless other movie and television appearances. On the con circuit, he has been known to take the stage with his pal, Bruce Campbell to entertain audiences.

The actor appreciates the macabre as well as the enigmatic which would make him a shoo-in for the hosting job with Unsolved Mysteries.

2. Robert Englund

Robert Englund is at the perfect point in his career to take on an assignment like Unsolved Mysteries. Since plans for another A Nightmare on Elm Street are on hold right now as New Line focuses on The Conjuring universe, this would be a fun adventure for the actor.

Let’s face it, he owns the screen no matter what part he is in so hosting duties would be second nature to him. His appearances on Eli Roth’s History of Horror were informative and entertaining.

He has an impressive demeanor and would definitely do the lead-ins to the segments justice. The actor would be my second choice to host the series.

1. Dan Aykroyd

Mr. Aykroyd has some serious chops and is the top choice for this particular gig. Dan is known for being a believer in the paranormal and hosted his own series, PSI Factor: Chronicles of the Paranormal from 1996 until 2000.

So, we know he is able to handle helming the ship for Unsolved Mysteries. The actor also has the gravitas and the demeanor that is the closest to Robert Stack. While there might be some question as to whether or not he would turn it into a parody like a Saturday Night Live skit, chances are he would not.

With the news of a new Ghostbusters movie coming out in 2020 and the announcement that Dan and Bill Murray would be getting back together again for Zombieland 2, if he were to be the presenter for the reboot, that would definitely guarantee a viewing audience.
