Vera Farmiga teases the “massiveness” of The Conjuring 3

During a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, Vera Farmiga teased the horrifying plot of her upcoming movie, The Conjuring 3.

It’s been three years since The Conjuring 2, when the Warrens battled the Enfield Poltergeist case in 1977 London. Since then, the franchise has continued to grow in size, expanding beyond the prolific demonologists, Ed and Lorraine Warren. While The Conjuring 3 isn’t set to be released for another year, it hasn’t stopped the horror franchise juggernaut from broadening its horizon with three more films in between.

Annabelle: Creation followed The Conjuring sequel in 2017, and The Nun followed that in 2018. This year we’ll be getting yet another entry into the franchise, Annabelle Comes Home, which will not only mark the first trilogy in the franchise, but give us our first glimpse of Ed and Lorraine Warren in two years. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga will reprise their roles in the Annabelle threequel.

Recently, Entertainment Weekly visited the set of Annabelle: Comes Home and while there they chatted with film star, Vera Farmiga, about the movie and The Conjuring 3:

"“Conjuring 3 is coming, and it will be a doozy,” Farmiga teased. “It will be big. So for me, visiting these characters [in Annabelle Comes Home], it’s like practicing your scales and doing a few arpeggios before having to dive deep into the next one. Because the next one is massive.”"

Having the chance to return to the role of Lorraine in the third Annabelle films appears to be a great mental and physical exercise for Farmiga, who claims the next Conjuring movie will be “massive!”

What is going to be “massive” about The Conjuring 3?

The easiest answer is, of course, the film’s budget. The Conjuring franchise is one of the most lucrative in horror history with all films combined bringing in a worldwide box office draw exceeding $1 billion dollars.

With the first film having a $20 million dollar budget and the second film increased to $40 million, it stands to reason the third film will have an even bigger budget. I imagine Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson are pulling in a pretty penny themselves.

With a bigger budget comes grander sets, and more visual effects, meaning the creative freedom for the third-entry is essentially, boundless.

Farmiga also stated this new movie will be a “doozy”. Given how terrifying the first and second films were, I believe her. I’m excited to see how far they push the boundaries of horror in their third outing.

While I am disappointed James Wan won’t be returning in a directorial role, I’m happy he’ll stay on as a producer. Screenwriter David Leslie Johnson, who worked closely with Wan on The Conjuring 2 and Aquaman will be back for the third film.

The Conjuring 3 will hit theaters nationwide on September 11, 2020.
