3. Evil Dead (2013)

You would think that in the year 2013, people would realize reading an ancient text bound in human skin and titled Naturom Demonto could have dire consequences. But then, if that were the case, we wouldn’t have this impeccable remake of the original 1981 film, Evil Dead.

Fede Alvarez’s vision for this film replaced the dark comedy from the original with buckets of blood (50,000 gallons, to be exact). That’s what makes it such a fantastic remake. Quintessential elements were kept intact, Alvarez shunned CGI in favor of practical effects, Ash’s car makes a cameo appearance, and the film even pays the infamous tree scene its due.

However, instead of doing a boring scene-for-scene rehash of the original movie, Evil Dead harnesses the spirit of the story and spins it into a gruesome, frenzied cabin trip from hell. It’s not the average remake that has scenes almost as iconic (but radically different) from the original film.

Between the electric knife amputation and the final battle taking place beneath a shower of blood rain, Evil Dead (2013) has no shortage of epochal moments.

Once the deadites are unleashed, it becomes apparent that Evil Dead has no intention of betraying the uncompromising vicious streak of the original film, even if it does so with a more self-serious disposition.
