James Wan set to direct untitled horror movie for New Line
Before James Wan continues his way through the superhero world, he will come back to the horror genre with a project for New Line. Here’s what we know.
James Wan is a man of many talents. Although, once a horror filmmaker, always a horror filmmaker, right? It’s not uncommon to find directors that stick to one genre for their entire career however, most will try a bit of everything at least once.
With superheroes taking over the film industry for a decade now, some filmmakers have made the jump to these universes, but they always come back to their roots. Right, James Wan?
Wan’s filmography is mostly horror with an action movie among them (Furious 7) and his most recent work as director was DC’s Aquaman. Although the last horror movie he directed was The Conjuring 2 in 2016, he has served as producer in many others, such as Lights Out and Annabelle Comes Home, but he’s now set to direct a new project from New Line.
According to Variety, James Wan has a horror project coming up before production on Aquaman 2 begins. The untitled project will have a script written by Wan and Ingrid Bisu, and will reunite him with New Line Cinema, producers of The Curse of La Llorona, Annabelle: Creation and others. It’s all in the family.

Wan’s introduction to the world of superheroes was a good one, with a few bumps here and there, but that’s part of the journey. He’s set to go back to Atlantis for Aquaman 2 as producer, but it’s yet to be confirmed if he will also direct.
Of course, he is not the only horror director that is part of the superhero movies trend – Scott Derrickson and James Gunn are some filmmakers that have brought their unique visions and styles to some very colorful superheroes, and they have also come back to the horror genre.
In addition to this project, Wan is also working on the I Know What You Did Last Summer TV series for Amazon Prime. If anyone knows his secret to have time to work on that many projects, please share.
Until then, among Wan’s upcoming projects are The Conjuring 3, set for a September 2020 release, and a ninth Saw movie, to be released on May 2020.
