World’s Biggest Ghost Hunt: Pennhurst Asylum is the first ever paranormal event of its kind. For two weeks, five investigators will attempt to uncover what is haunting the 110-acre facility. Does it live up to the hype that is being generated?

World’s Biggest Ghost Hunt: Pennhurst Asylum is being billed by A & E as “the longest continuously filmed paranormal investigation in television history,” per their press release. Five paranormal investigators are given unprecedented access to the 110-acre facility over a period of two weeks.

For those of you who might be unfamiliar with the history of this Pennsylvania location, Pennhurst Asylum is known as one of the most haunted institutions in the country. From 1908 until its closing in 1987, this complex was conceived as a way to deal with “socially undesirable” individuals.

At that time, our country had no idea how to handle people who were diagnosed as having developmental disabilities. The atrocities that occurred here were unspeakable.

So, it isn’t surprising that this location is haunted. There are so many tragedies that occurred there.

Of course, this is the Halloween season so all of the networks try to add a little bit of spooky programming to their schedules. With all of the other choices available, is this special event worth watching?

The answer is simple. It is a resounding yes. For those of you that enjoy reality shows like Big Brother and Survivor, the format of Ghost Hunt is similar including Diary Cam sessions.

What makes this more than your average supernatural television fare? In my mind, there are three reasons why this Pennhurst Asylum exercise stands head and shoulders above the competition.

3. The Paranormal Investigators

The World’s Biggest Ghost Hunt introduces us to five very likable and engaging personalities:

Austin George– a mechanical engineer by trade but an emerging sensitive who is learning how to deal with his abilities.

Zak Heino– Austin’s cousin who has a background in science with his electrical engineering degree.

Max Baumle– geologist and friend of Zak who is also the state-of-the-art equipment guru and paranormal skeptic.

Ali Horrick – an experienced empath who has been honing her ability to communicate with the dead from an early age.

Katie Burr– a seasoned paranormal investigator who appeared on Discovery Channel’s Ghost Lab.

Unlike most reality shows that are all about manufactured drama and conflicts, these individuals are all about teamwork and getting to the heart of the hauntings at the Asylum. They truly want to help those restless souls that still inhabit the location so that their stories can be told.

2. Scientific Approach

Zak and Max lead the team in terms of using scientific methods to weed out false positives from REM-POD readings and help to keep everyone grounded when they do achieve results from their investigations. They look for natural causes to phenomenon before immediately deeming everything as being supernatural occurrences.

For example, when they find that their two-way radios are interfering with the REM-PODS, they create a Faraday Cage so that the equipment can do its job properly and yield true results.

1. Intense Investigations

During the two-week period that the group spent on the premises of Pennhurst Asylum, they recorded over 100 paranormal events. Several of these contacts were high intensity especially one that took place in the Devon building.

Candyland was an indoor play area for children situated in the basement of that location. While Austin and Ali were conducting an investigation, Austin was “jumped” by a spirit and let’s just say the entire episode almost derailed the Ghost Hunt. It was extremely real, scary and very affecting.
