Universal isn’t giving up on their Dark Universe just yet. Elisabeth Moss shines in the haunting new trailer for the upcoming film The Invisible Man.

Universal may have stumbled tremendously with their attempt to reboot The Mummy franchise, but the studio is not backing down from their original goal of starting a classical monsters universe. Their next project will tackle Invisible Man.

The upcoming horror film is a fresh start for Universal to utilize their monstrous lexicon without spending as much money as their Dark Universe idea would have cost. One major advantage of the updated version starring Elisabeth Moss is that it no longer involves Johnny Depp.

Vulture reports that without Depp, The Invisible man becomes a “leaner” project, i.e., costs much less. It also gives them the added benefit of avoiding the controversy that would have come with his involvement due to his ongoing legal troubles.

Don’t expect Leigh Whannell’s iteration of the invisible man to float through space with sunglasses and a trenchcoat. This updated story will be more realistic in many ways. Whannell told Entertainment Weekly about his hopes for this film.

"“I wanted to kind of get away from that and make something that was really modern, really grounded, or as grounded as you can be when you’re dealing with a film called The Invisible Man.Just something that was really tense and scary in a way The Invisible Man hasn’t been before.”"

Universal finally released the official trailer for The Invisible Man, which is slated for release in late February of next year. It looks plenty terrifying. Moss, who has won numerous awards for her starring role in The Handmaid’s Tale, looks fantastic in the role. She also starred in Jordan Peele’s latest horror film, Us, earlier this year.

In this version of The Invisible Man, Moss’s character Cecilia Kass is in a relationship with an abusive boyfriend. She escapes with the help of her friend and his daughter, only to discover her boyfriend has committed suicide and left her 5 million dollars.

The only catch is that to claim the money; she can never be declared mentally unfit. Not long after her boyfriend’s supposed death, Cecilia is haunted by an invisible presence. Because no one else has witnessed anything strange, no one believes her. Cecilia begins to suspect h this entire scenario is a hoax created by her ex.

Aldis Hodge, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Storm Reid, and Harriet Dyer also star. You can watch the official trailer for yourself below.
