Sam Raimi is one of the finest creative minds currently working in Hollywood. In a recent interview, he imparted some words of wisdom on the art of filmmaking.

Sam Raimi is a true artist, in every sense of the word. He is the type of talent that sees the big picture and actually knows how to make his visions a reality. For four decades, he has been thrilling us with his creativity.

From the Evil Dead universe, to Spider-Man, to powerful dramas like A Simple Plan, he understands what audiences want in a movie and he delivers. That is why his name is frequently mentioned as someone up and coming filmmakers admire.

Let’s face it, who wouldn’t want to work with him? If you look at his filmography, you will notice the same names appearing over and over again. We all know Bruce Campbell frequently partners with him. However, Tobey Maguire and James Franco have also done numerous movies with him too.

In a chat with SyFy Wire, Raimi talked about meeting Richard Donner, who inspired him to change his approach to directing. When Donner was making the iconic 80’s classic, The Goonies, Sam was fortunate enough to be invited to the set.

That is when the young filmmaker had a revelation as he watched the seasoned pro interact with his talent. Raimi was struck by how Donner listened to ideas that his actors had and how he would develop them if he felt they would improve the quality of the production.

He also took note of how the veteran responded when a performer had a suggestion that wasn’t quite on the money and how he would explain why it wasn’t appropriate for the end result of the film. At the time, Sam had tunnel vision and wasn’t open to having a dialogue with his actors.

Raimi learned an invaluable lesson that day. Collaboration is the key to success. In his words:

"“Surround yourself with a great team of actors and crew. Be open to other ideas and improve your vision.”"
