5. Into the Dark: Flesh and Blood (2018)

Into the Dark is a horror anthology series that premieres exclusively on Hulu. Each month, Blumhouse Television releases a holiday-inspired episode. Flesh and Blood is 2018’s Thanksgiving episode; making it a simple choice to include in this list.

Flesh and Blood stars Dermot Mulroney (Insidious 3 and The Purge TV series) as Henry Tooms and Diana Silvers as his daughter, Kimberly Tooms (Ma).

After her mother was murdered by a still at large serial killer, Kimberly developed a case of agoraphobia. On the eve of Thanksgiving, she begins to fear that the person who may have murdered her mother may be the person closest to her.

Although Flesh and Blood takes place around the holiday, the usual images of Thanksgiving sit subtly in the background. Instead of a Thanksgiving feast, as we typically see in films centered around Thanksgiving, we find ourselves as spectators of a father/daughter relationship.

Flesh and Blood relies heavily on character and relationship development. This makes it easy to feel for Kimberly Tooms, especially when she starts to uncover her father’s secrets. With such a slow build-up, the final blow ends up hitting us harder than if Flesh and Blood would have been straight to the point.
