Dracula: Keanu Reeves

We just recently re-watched this Francis Ford Coppola opus on VUDU and honestly, think it is a fabulous adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic novel. While Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins are frequently cited for their fine performances, Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder usually receive the most derision.

Reeves portrays Ryder’s fiancé, Jonathan Harker. Personally, we think some critics go overboard because they are still comparing Keanu of the 80’s to Keanu of the here and now. During the 80’s, Keanu was a burgeoning young actor so yes, maybe some of his choices weren’t the best but everyone has to learn, you know?

The major complaint with his portrayal of Harker is that he chose to put on a British accent which seemed forced and not natural. Believe it or not, Reeves is serious about his craft and he is a perfectionist so he probably felt that it was necessary for his character.

Actually, we don’t find it distracting. Keanu manages to hold his own opposite some intimidating and theater trained thespians. In the 90’s, he was tapped to appear in Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic, Much Ado about Nothing. Branagh is highly respected and a graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts so would he have chosen Reeves for the role of Don John if he thought he couldn’t handle it?
