3 reasons we’re excited to see Underwater this weekend
By Mads Lennon
Underwater is an upcoming science-fiction horror film set almost entirely under the sea. Find out why we’re excited to see it.
Underwater is an upcoming creature feature following a group of underwater researchers forced to try and escape from deadly creatures intent on killing them all. The film stars Kristen Stewart, Vincent Cassel, Jessica Henwick, John Gallagher Jr., Mamoudou Athie, and T.J. Miller.
While it’s still too early to see what critics are saying about the movie, we’re looking forward to it based on the trailer and clips we’ve seen already.
3. It’s a creature feature.
I don’t know about you, but I’m a big fan of monster movies. Say “creature feature,” and I’m in. That alone has me excited for the film, even if it winds up getting a low critical score I’ll still be curious to watch it myself and see what happens.
The plot and atmospheric terror of the trailer reminded me a little bit of the sci-fi film Life, that starred Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal. Life was a pleasant surprise, and I’m hoping Underwater will be too.
2. The filming was super intense.

According to a new featurette (shown at the bottom of this article) featuring some of the cast members, making Underwater was no joke. They worked inside of a giant water tank and had to walk around in 140-pound suits.
It was not easy for them to walk around inside of them, but the director wanted it to feel “grounded, and gritty and real.”
Actress Jessica Henwick said it was the “hardest shoot she would ever do in her life.” I’m hoping to see all of that hard work pay off.
1. Kristen Stewart.
Say what you will about Kristen Stewart, but I think she is a great actress. People love to equate her to Twilight the same way they do with Robert Pattinson, but those movies were just blips in their career in the broader sense. Move on, people!
Both actors have proven themselves more than capable in a variety of films since then, and each one has raked in critical praise and award nominations since then. Stewart even won the César Award, which is a pretty big deal in France. She was great in Charlie’s Angels, and I’m excited to see what she brings to the table in Underwater.
