ABC has ordered a pilot for a new television series focusing on the brides of Dracula. The series aims to be a ‘sexy reimagining’ with ‘horror elements.’

On Wednesday, the news broke that ABC had ordered a pilot for a new series focusing on Dracula’s brides aptly titled The Brides. On the heels of the Netflix and BBC collaboration on Dracula, it looks like the original legendary bloodsucker is going to be something of a trend in 2020.

TVLine reports that the pilot will be written by Riverdale‘s executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa from Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television.

Another Riverdale alum, Maggie Kiley, who has directed episodes of both Riverdale and its spin-off Katy Keene, will direct the pilot episode in addition to serving as an executive producer. Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schecter have also boarded the potential series as executive producers.

According to the article, the television show is supposed to focus on a trio of empowered, immortal women. It will be a “sexy contemporary reimagining” of Dracula.

More from Vampires

I’m not sure how you get much sexier than Dracula, since the original novel had plenty of sex and horror, even if it wasn’t always blatant. It will also have “strong horror elements,” which is to be expected.

The original brides from Bram Stoker‘s novel had a minimal but unforgettable role in the book. In fact, this isn’t the first time the idea for this series has been tossed around. TVLine reports that it was previously in development at NBC.

Considering it’s on a network, I can’t imagine it being anything lurid. It would have been nice to see a show like this get picked up by HBO or Netflix.
