Unfortunately for fans of Stephen King who were hoping to see a series based on The Dark Tower, the project has been canceled by Amazon.

Stephen King‘s story about the Gunslinger and the eternal battle will not be arriving on a small screen near you any time soon. Sadly, Amazon has decided to pass on The Dark Tower after reading the pilot script they ordered.

However, all hope is not necessarily lost. Deadline reports that the pilot script will be shopped around to potentially interested buyers. It’s possible that another network or streaming service could save the series and decide to produce it.

The Dark Tower has already had one live-action adaptation with the 2017 movie starring Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba. It was poorly received by critics and audiences. It also failed to make much of a splash at the box office.

Amazon then ordered a new adaptation of the novel and fans were excited about the prospect of the series’ complex mythology being properly developed.

The series has always been considered as one of the more difficult of King’s projects to try and adapt to the screen. Apparently, Amazon didn’t find the pilot script up to snuff, since they’ve decided to cancel it.

That said, The Dark Tower is one of King’s most popular properties. Ideas have been floated around for years now on how to get the story told properly on-screen. It’s unlikely that this is the last time we’ll hear about it.

There are eight Dark Tower books in total, and they draw from multiple genres. The series was supposed to be set years before the 2017 film took place and set up an origin story for Roland Deschain. The rumored cast was supposed to contain Michael Rooker, Sam Strike, Jerome Flynn, and more.
