In some surprising news, the infamous cult animal horror franchise, Anaconda, is set to get a reboot in from the Snow White and the Huntsman writer.

The 1997 movie, Anaconda will be getting the reboot treatment, reports The Hollywood Reporter. Columbia Pictures is developing a remake of the film and hopes to fashion it after The Meg, that released in 2018 and made more than one billion dollars at the global box office.

Anaconda starred Jennifer Lopez, Jon Voight, Ice Cube, Owen Wilson, Eric Stoltz, Kari Wuhrer, and Jonathan Hyde. It followed a film crew exploring the Amazon when they meet a hunter hoping to find the legendary anaconda.  The crew finds themselves embroiled in a fight for their lives against the terrifying snake.

While critics loathed Anaconda and it made the rounds at the Razzies, audiences were far more forgiving. The movie became popular enough to spawn a franchise akin to the monster crocodile series, Lake Placid.

According to the article, Columbia Pictures wants to style it after the plot of The Meg where the characters faced off against a prehistoric shark. A similar idea was also used in the Piranha remake from 2010.

The only information we have thus far about the film is that the Snow White and the Huntsman writer will pen the script for the Anaconda reboot. He has also worked on films like Divergent and the recent Tomb Raider reboot starring Alicia Vikander.

No word yet if the original cast will return in any capacity or if the movie will officially move forward, but considering Hollywood’s love of remakes, it wouldn’t be all that surprising if it does hit the big screens in the near future.
