11. A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014)
Directed by Ana Lily Amirpour
Starring Sheila Vand and Arash Marandi
I don’t know what to say. There’s just something about vampires that is deeply romantic, despite their existence causing pain and suffering for others. There’s always a form of tragedy surrounding vampires and when combined with romance, it can make for powerful experiences, alone or with a partner.
Ana Lily Amirpour understands this perfectly and with A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, she mixes these elements beautifully with a nice dose of western to craft this black and white romantic nightmare.
Labeled as the “first Iranian vampire western” (no arguments there, to be honest), Amirpour creates another vampire love story, this time set in an Iranian city called Bad City, appropriately so. In it, a young woman who spends her time listening to music and skateboarding also moonlights as a rogue vampire, feeding whenever necessary and being tempted by love from a hard-working man named Arash.
You may know the drill here, but know that this film still stands on its own as a grimy, borderline depressing, yet hopeful romance story, complete with blood and violence to satisfy your morbid needs.
