American Horror Story is returning for Season 10, and so are many of the original cast members. However, Emma Roberts is noticeably absent.

Why isn’t Emma Roberts returning to American Horror Story for Season 10? That’s the million-dollar question. Evan Peters, who also had been a regular, took a break from the popular TV series in Season 9.  Leading to speculation that Peters needed a break from Roberts, and their breakup wasn’t as friendly as reported.

With Peters returning to American Horror Story for Season 10 and Roberts is absent, that seems to support the rumors. Or does it?

Ryan Murphy gave us a clue about why Roberts isn’t in the new upcoming season. In a Deadline article, when asked what the theme was going to be for the new season, Murphy responded that mum was the word.

However, Murphy did throw out some clues. He stated that the show was going back to the beginning and reuniting the actors that started the series. If we looked at the iconology of the first three seasons, we would get an idea of Season 10’s theme.

According to an earlier article, Murphy released a video that introduces Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, Lily Rabe, and Kathy Bates for Season 10.  They were the original stars in Season 1 and are returning for the new season.

More from American Horror Story

Emma Roberts’ character Madison Montgomery appeared in American Horror Story in Season 3: Coven and was killed by Kyle in episode 13: Seven Wonders. Madison reappeared in Season 8: Apocalypse when Michael Langdon resurrects her. However, Mallory travels back in time to kill Michael before he fully ascends to his power as the antichrist, and she is successful in killing him.

That means everything that Michael did in the future didn’t happen, and that includes Madison’s resurrection. So, poor Madison is still in Hell, but Mallory promises to go back to get her once she feels sufficient time has passed. I guess that means if Madison learns her lesson and becomes a good witch.

So, is Murphy planning to go back to the beginning of the series and connect Season 10 to the first three seasons? It makes sense as to why Emma Roberts didn’t come back as she was not part of the original iconology. It would also be challenging to come up with a good reason to resurrect her character after Madison had been killed and resurrected twice already.

Reuniting the original cast from Season 1 does leave it open for theories on what the theme will be for Season 10. Not only are they bringing back the original cast, but also the characters they brought to life. It will be interesting to see how they connect everything. Especially, with the beach scene and Orville Peck’s “Dead of Night” playing in the background.
