Candyman is going the way of A Quiet Place Part II and is delaying its release until September. The Cinemapocalypse of 2020 rages on.

Candyman is going the way of A Quiet Place Part II and postponing its theatrical releaseIt feels like someone, stood in the dark and in front of a mirror, said “COVID-19” five times, because the Cinemapocalypse of 2020 has begun, and social distancing has become the new norm.

So much so, that movie fans watching the latest theatrical releases, are doing so at home with some freshly popped microwave popcorn, through one of their favorite streaming services, rather than at their local cinema with some of their tasty concessions.

According to a new article at Deadline, more and more films are being bumped from summer release to the fall. This course of action is due to studio concerns of potentially low box office returns as a result of the global COVID-19 Pandemic. Now, Jordan Peele’s Candyman  is moving its Jun. 12 theatrical opening to Sept. 25.

With growing concerns of how the cinematic landscape is changing, because of the popularity of streaming services like Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu and Disney+, some of the studios are still hedging their bets on doing theatrical releases, despite the uncertain future (thanks to this virus).

More from Jordan Peele

According to S&P Global, the Asia-Pacific market saw an 85% drop in Box Office as of March 26, and Forbes pointed out that between March 13-15, American cinemas saw a drop of around 45%. The real question that begs to be answered is, “Will this current situation change how we see movies, as we move forward?”

Before this pandemic began, Universal released the first trailer for this iteration of Candyman back in February, which has been very popular with a majority of fans of the franchise. Despite this giant question mark hanging over the industry, I suspect Universal has high expectations come September.

Executive produced by Jordan Peele, written by Win Rosenfield, and starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen, Teynoa Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett and Colman Domingo, Universal Pictures expects the light at the end of this tunnel to be Candyman being a box office winner. Despite the grim reality that may see the transition of watching movies at home as a more permanent fixture, rather than at the cinema. Which will make going to the movies more of a novelty thing of the past.

Next. The Thing, Signs and other alien apocalypse movies. dark

Candyman will be released in theaters on Sept. 25.
