Bruce Campbell has influenced many indie filmmakers and actors but did you know his performance in Evil Dead 2 inspired industrial rock legends, Skinny Puppy to write a song? It’s true.

Bruce Campbell and his work in the Evil Dead trilogy has inspired up and coming actors and filmmakers all over the world. He has even been immortalized in song with Psychostick’s tribute to the horror icon.

Fans have even compiled scenes from Ash vs Evil Dead and set them to various tunes as an homage to the actor’s work. Now, Altpress has reminded us of another classic endeavor that features dialogue samples from Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead 2.

Believe it or not, industrial rock legends, Skinny Puppy in their song, “Who’s Laughing Now?” have sampled Bruce’s voice into their hard driving beats. The track can be found on their 1988 album, VIVIsectVI.

The group was part of the electronic music movement of the 1980’s and they were definitely more hardcore than the New Wave groups of the era. Nine Inch Nails, KMFDM, Nitzer Ebb and Front 242 are just some of the other bands at the forefront of this genre.

In “Who’s Laughing Now?” the title is obviously taken from Evil Dead 2 but there are even more bits from this cult favorite included within the song. Listen closely and you can hear:

  • “I hope you rot down there!”
  • “God forgive me for what I have unleashed!”
  • “We are the things that were and shall be again!”

Skinny Puppy has always embraced the darker side so it isn’t surprising that they would borrow from Raimi’s filmography. This isn’t the first time they have reached into the horror genre to find interesting clips for their music.

Worlock” off their 1989 album, Rabies includes a bit with Charles Manson singing. Even Roman Polanski is present from his creepy film about paranoia gone wild, The Tenant. With his dialogue finding its way into the track, “The Choke,” off of the group’s record, Bites. Check out other bands that have incorporated parts of the genre into their music.
