Mutant Swinger from Mars: Found footage B movie fun on Amazon
Mutant Swinger from Mars is just what the doctor ordered to combat quarantine blues. Michael Kallio’s fun, found footage, sci-fi, B movie spoof is available on Amazon Prime.
Mutant Swinger from Mars is like a mash up between Ed Wood’s brilliant schlock movie masterpiece, Plan 9 from Outer Space and Orson Welles’ 1938 exercise in paranoia broadcast, War of the Worlds. Director/Writer Michael Kallio has delivered the goods with his homage to all of those 1950’s sci-fi B movies we know and love.
When Martians decide to invade Earth because they need women to take back to their planet, things go off the rails in the best possible way. In order to achieve this goal, they turn to a mad scientist to create a “swingin’ hep cat” to entice those ladies into their beds.
Their Frankenstein, turns out to be Fez Fleckman (Pete LaDuke) who has the suaveness and charm of Vincent Price. So, naturally, the chicks are going to flock to him.
However, one in particular catches Fez’s eye. A gal by the name of Mitzy Nussbaum (Colleen Nash) who just happens to be in love with Rusty Rave (Michael East), the young hero in training.
Of course, Rusty gets wind of the scheme and sets out to free his girl from the clutches of Fleckman. Will Fez succeed or can Rusty and his pals thwart the extraterrestrials’ plans?
Make sure you pay close attention to Rusty’s friend, Mikey, who is played by none other than The White Stripes’ front man, Jack White. Interesting to note, this is his motion picture debut.
What makes this film so enjoyable is that Michael Kallio has created a fantastic Roger Cormanesque, low budget outer space movie. However, he has also made it tremendously meta.
See, Mutant Swinger from Mars is a film within a film. The premise is that it was an unearthed found footage classic from obscure indie director, Orton Z. Creswell (Pete LaDuke). We get to see the documentary featuring the “real-life” actors and actresses from his “opus.”
Their commentary is hilarious as they recount the making of this cult favorite. One can almost see shades of John Waters and Christopher Guest films in this delightful romp. Not to mention, a plethora of other pop culture references as well from Three Stooges’ gags to Jerry Lewis’ bits.
Kallio is a genre veteran having written and directed the horror thriller, Hatred of a Minute, starring the late, great Gunnar Hansen. He also appeared in Bruce Campbell’s, My Name Is Bruce. As well as being behind the camera for the documentary of the making of the actor’s self-parody, Heart of Dorkness.
