Shudder: Horror streaming service goes Down Under
By Carla Davis
Shudder has great news for horror fans in Australia and New Zealand: the streaming platform has expanded its reach.
Shudder General Manager Craig Engler made the announcement about the expansion on Monday, tying the news in with the upcoming Halloween season. He stated that the streaming network was “thrilled to share our unrivaled collection of curated horror” with Australia and New Zealand during the time of year they tend to stream the “biggest and best” films.
Shudder Australia originally soft-launched on August 6 prior to its official launch on the 17th. It was great news for genre fans Down Under, who had been waiting for two years since the launch announcement was first made.
The horror platform is owned by AMC Networks, and is currently available in the US, Canada, Germany, Ireland and the UK. Although their originals are available to all, the films and series availability does differ due to licensing by territory. Certain films are available in the US, but not in the other markets, and vice versa.
That said, the originals and exclusives are sometimes among the best in the library. Host is currently the highest rated horror film on Rotten Tomatoes, certified 100% fresh. Other personal favorites among the newer original and exclusive films are Blood Quantum, The Beach House, Yummy, Revenge, Mayhem and Hell House LLC.
Original series available will include Creepshow, Cursed Films, the 80s horror movie documentary, In Search of Darkness and Horror Noire. Honestly, each of these is worth the price of the subscription.
A recent screen shot of the Australia and New Zealand library included the super-scary Last Shift, Goodnight Mommy and The Guest as well. All of these are can’t miss films for lovers of the genre.
Subscription rates are $6.99 per month, or $69.99 for a full year. For a limited time, new subscribers to Shudder Australia and New Zealand can receive a 20% discount by using the code SHUDDERANZ at checkout.
