The season of horror Blu-ray sales continues with fine offerings from Kino Lorber and Mondo Macabro. We have recommendations!

I recently wrote about Scream Factory’s annual ‘Shocktober‘ sale, and now fellow boutique labels Kino Lorber and Mondo Macabro have announced their own efforts to bring in horror fans looking to expand their collections for the spooky season.

Let’s admit it: while getting a package of horror movies delivered to your doorstep is always cause for celebration, getting said package in the weeks leading up to Halloween carries its own unique giddy thrill.

Kino Lorber has an extensive catalog that encompasses all genres but their horror offerings are wonderfully eclectic.

They also host the Redemption label, which specializes in classic horror outside of the United States (with directors like Jean Rollin, Jess Franco and Pete Walker in the mix).

Mondo Macabro’s slogan is “the wild side of world cinema,” and their catalog (which I’ve only recently started to dig into) is populated by the likes of Lucio Fulci, Franco, and some lesser-known auteurs. Not too long ago, I acquired their DVD of Lady Terminator, and it’s a must-own for anybody interested in over-the-top knock-offs of James Cameron’s 1984 baby.

But whether you’re a seasoned patron of these labels or just getting your horror collection started, these sales are a good way to take a risk on some unique titles. Below are a few of my personal recommendations from Kino Lorber:

  • Almost Human (1974) – Umberto Lenzi crime thriller with Henry Silva and Tomas Milian
  • A Bay of Blood (1971) – Mario Bava creates the “body count” subgenre
  • The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920) – Looks great on Blu-ray, with optional ambient score by DJ Spooky
  • The Demons (1973) – Jess Franco’s surprisingly good rip-off of The Devils
  • A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014) – Ana Lily Amirpour’s unique take on vampirism
  • The Good Son (1993) – Underrated thriller with Macaulay Culkin and Elijah Wood
  • Lips of Blood (1975) – One of Jean Rollin’s best
  • The Night Stalker (1972) – TV movie that served as the pilot for the Darren McGavin series
  • Thirst (2009) – Park Chan-Wook’s brilliant revisionist vampire tale
  • Lost Highway (1997) – If you don’t have this David Lynch classic in your collection, buy with confidence!

From Mondo Macabro, I’d recommend Jose Larraz’s psychological thriller SymptomsWho Can Kill a Child? and the Lucio Fulci giallo, Lizard in a Woman’s Skin.

The Kino Lorber sale is underway and ends on Monday, November 2.

The Mondo Macabro sale begins at Noon EST on Thursday, October 29.
