Evil is finally back! After a lengthy hiatus, new episodes of Evil Season 2 have returned. To start, we get a brief recap of where we left off before the hiatus. Kristen, Ben and David will next be assigned to visit a sacred monastery where no words have been spoken since its inception 130 years ago. There, they have been tasked with investigating why the corpse of Father Thomas has not decayed at all in the year following his death.

Spoiler warning: The following article contains spoilers for Evil Season 2, Episode 7.

To begin, Kristen, Ben, and David arrive at the monastery and must immediately dispose of their cellphones to Father Winston (Kenneth Tigar) and Emanuel (Robert McClure), well, except for Ben who needs his to take photos (they disable all of its functions except the camera).

Channeling a little bit of Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s iconic episode, “Hush,” we embark on an exciting new journey with our favorite characters where their only method of communication is cartoon-brand write and erase boards.

Not long after arriving at the monastery, Kristen meets a young nun, Fenna (Alexandra Socha), who shows her the monastery’s wine cellar and even gives her some of what is essentially moonshine to taste. What results is a surprisingly charming, adorable, and I Love Lucy-esque interaction between the two women as Fenna shows Kristen how she cleans the whiskey barrels. They goof off together between sips of alcohol.

While Kristen is hanging out with Fenna, Ben and David help the monks move Father Thomas’s body to a new room for further insight. There, Ben notices what appears to be a demonic box or artifact in the room. “WTF,” is right, and the monks inform him that a demon is inside the box.

David asks the monks to show them the “second miracle.” They regroup with Kristen and Fenna. Fenna shows them the presence of what looks like stigmata from Father Thomas’s crucifix on her palms.

Outside of the monastery’s walls, Kristen informs David and Ben that she thinks the second miracle is fake because the marks on Fenna’s wrists are likely from the work she does pushing wheelbarrows every day. As for the demon cabinet, David says it is the entire reason the monastery was built.

The story goes that they constructed the monastery around it to ensure the demon never escapes, which it well if a single word is ever spoken inside. They even sleep with gags in their mouth to prevent anyone from crying out in their sleep. As for why Father Thomas is so perfectly preserved, Ben intends to test the clay he was buried in to see if it could have been naturally caused preservation.

Evil Season 2, Episode 7 recap: Fenna’s stigmata

Back inside, Kristen sits down with Fenna to check out her marks. It’s not just her hands. Fenna also has wounds on her feet and beneath her breast, in the same spots that Jesus was wounded while crucified.  David instructs Kristen to take photographs.

While watching over the demon cabinet, Emanuel presents David with a crucifix to wear around his neck and “silence his mind.” But it doesn’t really work. All he can think about is a spot on the ground where it looks like a monk threw up, “All I have to do is not think about a monk throwing up for a few minutes,” and Kristen. And of course, the word “f**k,” pops up several times as we’re now officially on the episodes where the creators knew they would be airing on Paramount+ and they had to take advantage!

Well, things get a little weird when David returns from the church. He notices that someone has written “I want you,” on his board. Did Kristen write it? Was she trying to say something else? Wishful thinking? A demon messing with his head?

It’s Ben’s journey that is the most terrifying at the moment as his crypt exploration results in something emerging out of the darkness and inching toward him. He sprints out just in time, after taking a few pictures, of course. He joins Ben and David for dinner, although it’s short-lived since Emanuel escorts Kristen to the table with the other nuns. David and Kristen share longing glances across the room, and Kristen can’t help but picture them having sex.

Evil Season 2, Episode 7 recap: Kristen breaks the vow of silence

Since men and women have to dine and sleep in separate quarters, Kristen gets shoved in a storage closet full of terrifying statues. Left to her own devices, it doesn’t take long for Kristen to break the 130-year vow of silence. A simple “Boo,” uttered into the night allows the demon to escape from the cabinet. Within moments, one of the skeletal statues carrying a scythe inside Kristen’s room wakes up and climbs on top of her bed.

One of the monks keeping watch over the cabinet notices the doors have opened and summons everyone in the monastery. Everything gets way worse as multiple monks and nuns succumb to something infecting their bodies. Ben, David, and Kristen go back outside the walls to talk. Kirsten finally gets to vent her frustrations about how anti-women this place is and demands they call a doctor. David argues they should let them handle this spiritually because one of the monks is an exorcist and another is a doctor.

Kristen marches off to call for medical assistance, and Ben informs David that some weird scrapings inside the cabinet match what was found in the coffin. He needs to figure out what it is.

David and the monks seek out the exorcist to take care of Fenna, whose pain appears to be progressing faster than anyone else’s. And guess who the exorcist monk on hand is? None other than Father Mulvehill. Fenna has a visceral reaction every time Mulvehill puts ointment on her growing wound, and suddenly it bursts open, and hundreds of flies burst loose. EW.

Evil Season 2, Episode 7 recap: Is it demonic or botflies?

Ben’s research might have the answer. He believes the monastery has a botfly infestation, and it would explain the humming in the crypts. If Father Thomas was infested in botflies and if more were inside the cabinet, it explains why everyone got infected when they brought the body to the surface, and the cabinet opened.

The botflies lay larvae under the skin’s surface, and when Mulvehill put ointment on Fenna’s wound, he inadvertently covered the air holes, which is actually the best way to bring botflies to the surface to get them out. Knowing what the problem is, the monks and Mulvehill heal everyone else who was infected.

Considering how disgusting botflies are, it’s not surprising that David wishes Ben didn’t have explanations for everything. There is one thing Ben can’t explain why anyone would willingly live in silence for their entire lives. No movies. No sex. No storytelling. Nothing. David doesn’t see it that way. He believes the monks are at peace and is tempted to stay there. We find out that Emanuel wrote “I want you,” on David’s board. His finished message was, “I want you to stay here.” But David says God needs him out there.

As Ben, David, and Kristen prepare to leave, Kristen says goodbye to Fenna, who avoids being hugged. But Kirsten does leave her the graphic tee she slept in, and Fenna is delighted to find it waiting for her in her room. Does anyone else hope to see Fenna and Kristen reunite someday!? They’re adorable.
