By Mads Lennon
While I pride myself on celebrating Halloween all year long, I think it’s officially normal to begin that celebration in late August/September. It’s not fair we only get one month to celebrate the best holiday of all, if you ask me. If you’re interested in finding out what new horror movies are coming out in September, we’ve got you covered!
From James Wan’s highly anticipated Malignant and the Nightbooks adaption to Nicolas Cage’s Prisoners of the Ghostland, here are some of the new horror movies we’re most excited to watch this month.
19 new horror movies are releasing in September 2021
19. Seance
Coming exclusively to Shudder later this month, Seance follows a new girl at the prestigious Edelvine Academy for Girls. Soon after her arrival, six girls invite her to join them in a late-night ritual, calling forth the spirit of a dead former student who reportedly haunts their halls. But before morning, one of the girls is dead, leaving the others wondering what they may have awakened.
Seance streams exclusively on Shudder September 29.
18. Malignant
The latest James Wan horror film comes to HBO Max this month. Annabelle Wallis stars as Madison, a woman tormented by disturbing visions that she is horrified to discover are actually part of a terrifying reality. Apart from Wallis, the film also stars Maddie Hasson, George Young, and Michole Briana White.
Malignant releases same-day on HBO Max and in theaters on September 10.
17. Prisoners of the Ghostland
Nicolas Cage stars in this neo-noir western action flick as a notorious criminal named Hero. Hero is enlisted to save the governor’s adopted granddaughter Bernice (Sofia Boutella) from a dark supernatural universe known as the Ghostland. But to escape, he must break the evil curse gripping the world. Directed by Sion Sono, the film also stars Bill Moseley.
Prisoners of the Ghostland releases in theaters and on demand on September 17.
