Spotify has announced another original true crime podcast, Disappearances with Sarah Turney, which will premiere on Thursday, September 9.

Disappearances with Sarah Turney will feature true stories about missing persons, some of whom chose to disappear, and others who were victims. Many of the stories will be familiar to followers of true crime.

In the U.S., missing person’s reports are filed on average once every minute. The new podcast will explore the difficulties family members and friends face when a loved one goes missing, something Sarah certainly understands.

Sarah became known in the true crime community after she brought up the 20-year-old disappearance of her sister Alissa Turney on TikTok and other social media outlets.

She appeared on the true crime podcast The Murder Squad, where she spoke with retired cold case investigator Paul Holes and investigative journalist Billy Jensen. As a result of her very determined efforts, Sarah and Alissa’s stepfather was arrested in 2020. Sarah appeared on the podcast The Murder Squad, which is where I first heard her story.

Some of the stories we will hear on the true crime podcast include:

  • The mystery of the three men who escaped Alcatraz, the highest security prison in the world. None of them has ever resurfaced, even though they escaped in 1962.
  • The disappearance of Michael C. Rockefeller, who went missing during an expedition in New Guinea in 1961.
  • A 6-year-old boy named Etan Patz was the first child to be featured on a milk carton after he disappeared in New York in 1979.
  • Australian Prime Minister Harold Holt was never seen again after swimming in rough waters at Cheviot Beach, Victoria. Though he was presumed to have drowned, conspiracy theories have run rampant ever since he went missing in December 1967.

During each episode, Sarah will direct listeners to her nonprofit organization Season of Justice, which helps to provide financial resources for families and law enforcement. The end goal is to bring some closure to families affected by open crime cases.
