It’s game over for many characters in American Horror Story: Double Feature as of this season’s fifth episode, “Gaslight.” In American Horror Story: Double Feature Episode 5, several fan-favorite characters bite the dust, and at least one person transforms into the dreaded “pale person.”

Warning: The following article contains major spoilers for American Horror Story: Double Feature Episode 5.

As if it wasn’t bad enough that Alma was trying to off her poor mother Doris, in this episode, she takes things to another level by gaslighting her into taking the black pill almost immediately after giving birth to her baby. And speaking of the baby, multiple characters try to eat it in this episode, including Alma herself! She takes a “sip” from her baby brother’s arm.

Elsewhere, Belle recruits Karen to kidnap the baby to feast on it like she’s done with other children in the past. Newborn blood is incredibly alluring to these vampiric creatures since it’s almost as effective as the pill itself.

American Horror Story: Double Feature Episode 5: Doris becomes a pale person

This season has been foreshadowing Doris’s lack of talent since the first episode. Interestingly, she somehow managed to get a job redecorating the Brown’s home after only having one failed project before that. But when Alma finally convinces Doris to try the pill, she transforms into a pale person. It’s unfortunate since Doris was one of the few decent people on the show.

Even worse is that none of her family members show any real sympathy for her. Harry does, at first, but later, he admits to Doris that he’s always cared more about his work than his family. He even goes so far as to say that her turning into a feral creature is better than if she had stayed alive and had to witness all of his success and future dating of hot starlets. He’s literally the worst.

By the end of the episode, Doris has shaved her head and join her fellow creatures of the night in roaming the graveyard and devouring any furry woodland creatures that happen to cross their paths.

American Horror Story: Double Feature Episode 5: Karen commits murder-suicide

As if Doris’s character arc wasn’t depressing enough, things get even more traumatic where Karen is concerned. Mickey forces her to take the pill by abandoning her to the pale people. If she doesn’t take it, they’ll tear her apart, so she really doesn’t have a choice.

But the last thing Karen wants is to become a monster like everyone else in town. Like Doris, she’s one of the only characters with a pure heart. She doesn’t want to kill people, which is a rarity in P-Town!

By forcing Karen to take the pill, Mickey signs his own death warrant. Even though Karen probably did have enough talent to avoid Doris’s fate, she still doesn’t want to be a blood-drinking monster forever. After coaxing MIckey into bringing her to the beach to find a victim to feed on, Karen turns the tables on him and rips out his throat. Then she paints her final masterpiece and takes her own life by slitting her wrists and walking into the ocean to drown.

Are Karen and Mickey for sure dead? It seems so, but this is American Horror Story. It’s possible one or both of them could have survived, although it doesn’t seem likely at this point. Next week is the finale of the “Red Tide,” storyline so it should confirm their fates and show us how the first half is going to connect to the second part of Double Feature, “Death Valley.”
