The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula is returning to Shudder for a fifth season
By Carla Davis
Shudder has announced that The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula will be returning to the horror streaming platform for its fifth season. The renewal comes as no surprise to fans of the show, who have been tuning in to season four in droves.
Season four of The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula debuted in October and has become the most-watched program currently on Shudder. With two episodes left in the season, we are waiting anxiously to see who will be crowned the world’s Drag Supermonster (and win that $100,000 grand prize).
In a statement, the Boulet Brothers pronounced the current season to be “a roller coaster ride,” and said that although it has been a huge success, “it’s only the beginning, and we can’t wait to share what we have planned next. We have such sights to show you!”
The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula is a drag competition with a twist…well, a lot of twists, to be honest. These are not your typical pageant-type queens competing; Dragula contestants color outside of the lines in often dark ways.
The core values of The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula are drag, filth, horror and glamour.
Contestants are given challenges for each episode, with each challenge including a “floor show” for which they must follow specific guidelines to create unique characters. For example, in the most current episode, the “uglies” (as they are affectionately referred to by the Boulet Brothers) were challenged to create a Killer Clown. Clowns are scary enough, right? So imagine a clown with jagged teeth, covered in blood. Yikes.
As with similar competitions, the uglies are judged by The Boulet Brothers and assorted guest judges, and the bottom two must compete in a challenge. This season’s challenges have included cockroach-infested chambers, being subjected to electrical shock and hanging out in vacuum sealed latex. Afterward, the lowest-scoring queen is “murdered” by the Boulets in an entertaining, bloody and innovative manner.
No spoilers here, but the final three contestants are all fantastic, and it’s anyone’s guess which of them is going to win the bloody crown. If you haven’t watched The Boulet Brothers’ Dragula, and are interested, you can still watch each episode of season four on Shudder. The final two episodes will debut on Tuesday, Dec. 14 and 21.
