When EPIX first revealed they were turning the Stephen King short story and Salem’s Lot prequel Jerusalem’s Lot into a horror series, I was pretty excited. But I’m not sure why or how the decision was made to turn a short story into ten full-length episodes. As fans of King know, Chapelwaite is the name of Charles Boone’s ancestral home located near Jerusalem’s Lot.

The story takes place during the late 19th century with Charles and his children returning to the small town of Preacher’s Corners, outside of Jerusalem’s Lot. But once the Boones arrive, they are met immediately with scorn and derision from the townsfolk. It doesn’t take long for Charles to realize that his family has a dark and terrifying history that extends into the nearby Jerusalem’s Lot. Unfortunately, Chapelwaite is pretty dull for most of its runtime.

The more interesting story elements don’t really come into play until the second half of the season, and even then, it never really gains much momentum. Many of these problems could have been fixed if the show was just a short three-four episodes max. Stretching it out for ten reveals that the story doesn’t have much meat on its bones.

Verdict: SKIP
